It's definitely ok to turn down an interview. Just say something like "my current workload hasn't allowed much opportunity to prep. I don't want to waste anybody's time by not putting my best foot forward. Im happy to stay in touch and set something up once my workload lightens up a bit".
It won’t help you at all. These places interview tons of folks.
If you think that the firm does off cycle you can decline and say you’d be very keen for off cycle. Otherwise if they just do on cycle, I’d suggest trying to interview, make a strong impression and do your best on the modeling test. Most firms that accept consultants have some room for error on modeling tests and care more about the debrief
I've never turned down an interview, but looking back it may have been wise to in those moments. Would have saved me embarrassment, and would have saved them some time.
