If a large firm has not mentioned helping you with relocation (But they know you are moving across the country in America), is it okay to ask them? Is it the norm to help all people relocating for a job? By help I mean like $ to help with moving. How do I ask if this is allowed or do I assume there is none since they have not mentioned it

It wouldn't hurt to ask, but I would think that relocation assistance would have been outlined in your offer letter had the firm intended to offer it.

My firm offered $5k reimbursement. BL

Most big firms help with relocation. I’d ask.

Thank you!

Definitely worth asking. Could you check the company policy and see if there's anything about relocation in there?

They only told me if I had quesitons on benefits I can shoot them an email, but I dont know what the policy is. I thought they would just offer it after accepting the offer. How much do firms ussually give?

Yeah, the time for you to ask for that was at the offer stage. I’d be surprised if they entertained it now since you don’t have much leverage if you’ve already accepted the offer, but who knows. You don’t know unless you ask, and it probably won’t hurt to ask.

It’s not as much of a bargaining point at that stage so much as it is an inquiry regarding job benefits. If they came back to you then and said no that’s a benefit they don’t provide, you could’ve told them “ok I’ll get back to you with my decision” and at that point they would’ve had incentive to provide it to induce you to accept the offer. Now that you’re past the offer stage, they don’t have any incentive to provide it to you other than the goodness of their own hearts. Ask HR, certainly not the partner. Just play dumb. “Hi, reaching out because I want to see if we can schedule some time to discuss the firm’s relocation benefits.” They might already have a policy in place so don’t ask for any money on your own volition, just give a generic “I understand it’s customary to cover reasonable relocation expenses.”

Depends on why you're moving, but if you were recruited to make a move cross country, moving expenses are common. If you've decided to move and sought a position in another city, they may consider it or give you a signing bonus that you can use for those costs, but it is less likely. There is no harm in respectfully asking for moving expenses or in floating that if you receive an offer you'd appreciate them considering the expenses of the move when they provide it.

Nah I was applying for the job to move and they didn't recruit me.

I already accepted the offer, and no mentions were made. Are relocation expenses outlined in offer letters? I thought it woild be just something they offer or not offer accepting the offer as a matter of policy

Yes. Just ask politely but directly if they offer relocation assistance or what is the assistance package

I checked the "need assistance with relocation" box on a job application and was rejected immediately.

Is being a legal recruiter very cut throat? Obviously you're competing with recruiters from other recruiting firms, but given it's a commission based model, I would think there's some level of cut throatness even within the same recruiting firm. The fact that it seems like the recruiter market is pretty saturated, as well, probably doesn't help? Any insights/experiences would be appreciated, thanks!

I currently work as a personal injury lawyer at a small law firm, 5 years experience, graduated from T30 law school in 2015. Our subject area is pretty niche, and I am looking to branch out. Not big law, but a different subject area, and hopefully something with a better work life balance (have a small child with hopes for more). Open to leaving the law for a compliance/HR/other type position. Am I even marketable for something like that? Am I being unrealistic?

I'm a second year at a V30 firm in an energy regulatory practice. I do some litigation, some regulatory compliance/deal advising, and some purely transactional work (energy projects).
