If a paralegal with about 15 years of civil experience wants to hop into the corporate paralegal world, where would he/she start? More specifically, what does a corporate paralegal do?

A lot of the skills overlap, you’re just applying them in a different context. Organizing documents, completing forms, drafting documents from precedents, preparing document sets, researching procedures, liasing with vendors, reviewing documents for specific information, gathering information and transferring it to schedules or exhibits, etc. there’s a different set of terminology in the corporate context but you’d pick that up quickly. The biggest difference is that instead of dealing with the courts you’re more likely to deal with secretary of state’s office.

it depends on industry. like tbe other poster said - basically application of similar legal concepts with a twist on the scope of relevance of certain rules
of procedure depending on the primary nature of business the corporation is engaged in.

Civil service to in house gets interesting in my experience- i went in house for a private financial services company for 5 ges - then criminal federal for a year - then civil litigation bankruptcy in house fot a public bank for 2 yrs -
then large firm probate estate tax etx for 8 mos (toxic) but liked the work - then to smaller criminal defense firm - loved it- NOW in house at a tech startup with elements of finance lease laws and lending.

I would say if you’re interested in business, going in house to a financial services company that is privately held (not a bank - too much compliance and paper pushing) would perhaps be interesting to you. many of the contractual provisions are actually quite interrsting and u will lilely grt more autonomy to draft contracts yourself with double checking from an attorney, which i found much more engaging than the types of tasks I completed in civil litigation - filing same complaint forms, same process for largely uninteresting matters with little to pursue from debtors in the event of default.

if you dont get bites in house within tbe legal dept id apply in house in a litigation dept and then move to the other dept after time passes- a lot more ppl with jobs involving elements of civil procddufe and lots of filings of case documents for civil matters seemed to end up starting in litigation in house at both in house places I worked at than they did on tbe legal team.

you might also look into ngos, 5013cs for legal admins or something with an underwhelming title and an interesting job description somes those seem to be diamonds in tbe rough of the land of misc in house / non traditional legal support work.

coalitions against domestic violence are usually state funded. more specific and tied to a moral causes, and a chance to do more interesting or unfamiliar tasks than you may suspect.

Boards of local non profits for causes important to you - did some voluteer work drafting and helping secure startup for dog rescue 5013c and worked to help them secure the facility sign and review contracts do legal research and facilitate execution and retention of documents. managing their sos filinngs, reviewing insurance docs, benefit terms, medical plan offerings. you’d probably be surprised at how good you would be at any of that.

I also really enjoyed working as a member of a local coalition against human trafficking and slavery. was unpaid but the wealth of knowledge and depth of interaction and connections i made and the unique skillsets i built upon from others volunteering as well were highly beneficial relationships.

I think there is significant demand in the world of social services and public legal aid as domestic violence and mental health struggles thrive in post isolation periods historically.

you may also like working in house for a third party lender who loans to all sorts of different clients and markets.

hope this helps!

I would say Intellectual Property & Transactional Law

I’m currently a Tax LL.M. student and will be interviewing with all the big four accounting firms (both client-facing and WNT) and a few law firms. Can anyone give me some insight on what working at either is like and what things I should be considering when picking either?

Any success stories reaching out to a recruiter on LinkedIn? I genuinely believe I am qualified for multiple roles at Google, but I don’t know how to break through. I’ve messaged like 5 recruiters, no one ever replied

Has anyone seen any unique places to find UX portfolios or post jobs other than the usual suspects?
Some UX Slack channels were doing well for a while but I definitely don’t see as much traction there. Meetups obviously came and went. Even the portfolio sites like Dribbble and Behance don’t seem that same.

Any idea how long FIS global Pune is allowing WFH?

All I want is to aggressively pay off debt, earn a bit higher paycheck, be more balanced and consistent and reliable, improve my health and take better care of myself, and not almost exclusively dread my job. And some time to socialize. These all seems fairly simple… but i am still struggling to accomplish this. It’s downright nerve wracking and frustrating.

Waiting to hear back on an opportunity at an awesome company. They haven't officially passed on me (like they have for others), but they haven't extended an offer. Sounds like they're bringing in more candidates as well.

Is this a red flag? Should I be worried if I do get an offer about working for a company that is waiting for better candidates and holding on me a a second choice?

how do you all maintain a good work-life balance?

Hello Fishes,

I got offers from Deloitte USI and Accenture. Both are offering 8.5LPA fixed. Which would be the best option? Need your quick suggestions pls.

10-12 days back I had an interview with UBS. I have not received any feedback yet. In UBS portal application is shown as interviews in progress. I tried sending mail to the recruiter asking for feedback but no response. Can I assume I did not clear the interview or interview process takes this much time.

Additional Posts in Paralegals

Anyone in the South Florida area looking to make a move? My firm is hiring a litigation/employment paralegal, hybrid schedule.

Question. How would you handle an attorney who doesn’t explain assignments very well? Everyone including attorneys get confused by this attorney’s instructions. Often times the attorney gets angry or upset when instructions are not followed.

I’ve been activity looking for new paralegal roles but my last position was working in the public sector. Some have told me that it’s a pro, others have said that it’s a con. I’m largely applying for positions in the private sector now, and I’ve found that I don’t have many of the entry level skills like e-filing that employers expect. Is there any alternative to taking on a role that is completely entry-level to gain those?

How often is too often to reach out to attorneys/partners for work? We’ve been super slow last ~2 months but I want to send CYA emails w/ work requests in case anyone asks why I have so many nonbillables. Is every week/two weeks really annoying?

any remote paralegal positions open ? i have family immigration experience !

Was approached for a position with Novartis - but I recently heard they laid off a big group of people. Does anyone know anything about the culture? TIA

Anyone looking to grow into legal project manager/operations manager from their paralegal role? If so, are you in a more specialized paralegal role (ex. patent) or a practice area general role (like IP)? All thoughts welcomed.

I’m trying to decide where I want to be down the line as there’s a definite cap in how far “up the ladder” you can go as a paralegal.

I have over 20 YOE and have worked in NJ all of my career. I was just approached about a great position in NY. The position is offering 10- 40K plus ample overtime.
I’m concerned about the transition; not used to commuting or being in the office everyday for that matter. I’m currently working a very flexible hybrid schedule. My thoughts: 10K more not worth considering; 20K more I will listen; 40K more I will jump. Thoughts? Has anyone ever made this type of transition in their 40s?

I am a paralegal with 7 YOE (mixture of workers comp defense, personal injury, and now working in the litigation department in-house for a mortgage company). I have a BS in Legal Studies and am considering obtaining my MBA.

Anyone pivot from the legal world into something else using an MBA? I just feel like I’ve hit a ceiling and won’t ever make the money I would like to.

I’m thinking maybe risk, compliance, or HR, although none of these things necessarily appeal to me.

Met with partner and law clerk "associate-to-be" to discuss work to be done on a specific matter. Partner issued each of us specific tasks. One week later, the law clerk wants to discuss tasks and what needs to be done. Appears to me the clerk is going to shift his tasks onto me. Advice appreciated.

Right now, I do criminal and domestic law. I'm seriously burned out. I'm looking at corporate and other litigation positions. A lot of them are related to contract work (as in reviewing, preparing, etc.). For anyone that has switched from criminal/domestic litigation to other litigation or corporate positions, how much of your previous knowledge and skill set transferred over? I'm a fast learner and want to show I'm more than an entry-level hire.

Any paralegals here working at Nesenoff & Miltenberg LLP in Manhattan? How’s the culture, pay, and work and life balance?

Anyone working as a virtual freelance paralegal? How do you get clients?

Currently at a firm in Seattle, WA making $68k a year. I have a BA as well as a paralegal cert and 6 YOE. I recently asked for an increase to $90k based off research for comps. but not hopeful they’ll give it to me. I’ve been searching around for other jobs and have recently been contacted by a few w/ comps of $95k but would have to go back to the office. I currently can work remote but the partners are telling new hires eventually will be back in the office 5days. Go or stay?

Have any paralegals done the Paralegal Bootcamp programs? I am looking for reviews and feedback before I take the plunge?

Are any of the paralegal exams worth it? Just spent some time looking at the requirements for PACE. I have a bachelors (and masters), neither in paralegal studies, no paralegal cert, but 9 years of experience. About 4 years in T&E and the last 5 in house corporate. Obviously haven’t had issues getting hired without a cert, but working on my development plan for my performance review and thinking about continuing ed. Curious for your thoughts. TIA!

I’m currently looking for a new paralegal role. I’m the only paralegal at a startup personal injury firm. Looking to steer away from litigation and focus on transactions/corporate/M&A. I have over 5 YOE. If anyone has any leads in NYC and/or remote please DM me.

I have a total of 12 months of experience as an IP paralegal. The first 6 months were with a global law firm and the second 6 months were with a famous retail company. I am currently working with an agency that would like to assign me to a company that is in need of an IP paralegal for a total of 6 months. My current salary with the agency is £35k (based on my current experience) but I would like to ask for more money before I accept this new role. Please advise how much money I should ask for.

What does everyone here to do to maintain work-life balance as a paralegal? I know it's a little bit silly of a question, but I am sincerely asking for advice.
