Doesn't everyone know what everyone else makes based on their level/tenure?

I wish, but not true at Papa D
The staffing files/pricing models are based on eta card billing rates by level and what part of the op model a resource sits in.
SMs would only know salaries anecdotally or based on their own tenure at those levels previously.
“Eta card” = standard
Pro
You could probably get a pretty confident range but not exact
The SM has access to an excel model or other tool that models project profitability based on an average loaded cost of each resource. They don't have that info on an individual basis. As such, they can't differentiate between the underpaid homegrown consultant and the competitively paid experienced hire.

No, at least at EY we know the bill rate and the cost rate for a rank /practice. Would assume that's calculated based on the average cost of the rank in that practice. It doesn't tell us the salary or the total compensation. However, a lot of us are generally aware from our own history how much people might make.

Probably, if they cared? Buy why would they? And what are you concerned about, OP?
No concerns, just curiosity.
Literally anyone at Deloitte can download the pricing model and figure out the average overhead cost by resource/type level if they take the time to learn how to use the pricing model. The SM does not have any more info than what is built into the pricing model.

Some people, yes. Others no. They usually don’t tell us.

You can usually back into it +/- a few grand.
