I love summer Fridays more than the next guy but trying to get any work done and running an account during the summer is tough. Everyone is out all the time. I never need to photoshop juniors work as much as during the summer. Luckily we have interns!

Well maybe push back on timelines for once. I’m sorry that the 4 hours off gave you an inconvenience or was it the fact that the 4 hours off also meant they had the weekend off like normal people?

This is one of those themes that bizarrely contradicts so many other threads on FB. On the one hand, everyone laments layoffs. Then, most people seem to want opportunity, raises and promotions. But, surprisingly, there are so many who don’t seem to want to work much. How is your agency going to survive if no one really wants to work? How will you be valuable to your clients if you are only available four days a week? @SC1: Up until relatively recently, people worked six days a week. Sometimes sixty, seventy hours. Henry Ford didn’t extend the work week; he and the labor unions shortened it.

More hours doesn’t equal more success. The hardest workers aren’t guaranteed to be the ones that get ahead. In any case, if your team has a deadline, you don’t get that summer Friday anyways. Just like you don’t get your evenings and weekends. It’s like that foosball table that only gets used by the interns and that one art director that disappears to go surfing at lunch.

Here's an agency in New Zealand that started doing 4-day weeks and their profits are up. More hours do not equal more productivity. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/19/work-less-get-more-new-zealand-firms-four-day-week-an-unmitigated-success

They can’t afford it

We can do it because clients do it. Get them on board for a 4 day work week and then we can do the same.

Sunmers are usually slow, so it works out.

like

There’s less work to do in the summer and a lot of clients take vacations and long weekends so the agency hands out half days.

like

F*ck yeah. I’ve been saying this for years. 40 hours was Henry Ford’s idea, right? Why are we still adhering to this arbitrary number? Not that we don’t work more than that at times but why 5 days a week?!

I’ve been working full time mostly remotely for the past six years. (Yes I know this is rare). While most people are wasting time commuting to an office, I’ve already been up working for HOURS. I have been working crazy long work weeks for years just like everyone else. As I’ve gotten older, though, it all seems really pointless, especially as a salaried employee. I quit my last job (I took an in house job in an office but the commute was 4 hrs a day) because I refused to be a slave to that BS and I’m freelancing now. There is no badge of workaholism worth giving up your life for. It’s workerbee stupidity, in my opinion, and leads to burnout, not success. My point about the 40 hour workweek is that we have all just accepted this as the norm rather than challenging it. Many countries in Europe have 35 hour weeks with 6+ weeks of vacation. Why do we pride ourselves on being slaves to our work, especially when it’s mostly thankless and truly only enriching those at the top? I think WFH Fridays all year would be a nice compromise. I’d wager productivity would drastically increase overall. As a culture, we need to let go of our grip on the workaholism. If you don’t own the joint and you’re not up for a serious promotion or you’re just building your book and you need to, what the hell are you doing it for?

TL/DR CCO’s post: Let’s bring back the 80-hour workweek! This time, we’ll even do it to the upper-middle class executives! Disrupt the 40 hour work week!

Venables gives it year round, but let’s be honest...most of us never are able to leave early every week, but it’s nice to know it’s there. At least I don’t feel guilty leaving at 4

On a related note, whatever happened to the 4-day workweek option from Grey? Did that take off, or fizzle?

like

I would take a pay cut to work 4 days, even if the hours worked out to 5 ( instead of the usual 6)

like

15% cut Grey

That’s an Art Director question, Copywriter. (And yes, I do mean that as an insult.)

Many agencies now only give them with the contingency that you still do 40 hours minimum rest of the week. They still have to hit scope of work targets

No such thing in Asia...

Mentally I’m having a hard time in this industry. I snuck into tier 2 consulting from an unknown school where no one goes to consulting or IB. I’m surrounded by ivy leagers who are all smarter than me. I feel like I don’t belong. I feel I haven’t accomplished anything impressive or that I’ve gotten lucky with what I have accomplished. Sometimes I think i would be happier if I was a construction worker who didn’t even know what consulting was.
