Because the standards for hiring in advertising always favor white people. In the creative dept for example. For a very long time big names agencies would get their entry-level talent from portfolio schools or internships. Neither of which favors POC considering most of us don’t have the resources for an expensive finishing school or to supplement a low-wage job. Then as you go up the ladder, if you didn’t already start out at one of those resume building agencies, you won’t have awards and it’s harder to get hired. So if you’re Hispanic or Black for example, you’d only get to work at a minority shops, and eventually get pigeonholed there. POCs are rarely hired on potential, only on agency/awards/school. It’s a very frustrating cycle.

The ones that do get in by some kind of miracle are pushed out because they have a different point of view on things

“Opportunity hoarding”. It’s the phenomenon in which a small circle of people inside agencies share details of choice opportunities early, and more in depth, with a small circle of chosen friends and associates. No one submitting a resume through an automated LinkedIn link or attending a career fair can compete with Chad tipping off Brad and personally introducing him to the boss before the job is even posted.

Wait. What's the difference between opportunity hoarding and networking?

For one, unpaid internships and an expensive portfolio school create economic barriers for diversity. And, as with many industries, hires are very much referral based, meaning people tend to stay in the bubbles they know. Those are just two of a million reasons.

No one said all. But it's wrong to think that a racial wealth gap doesn't exist. It does. And it's a contributor.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There’s an economic barrier to the ad industry because of portfolio schools. You want more diversity? Get rid of that barrier or make the barrier less of a financial burden.

like

Yes AD2 - but combine that with racial economic disparity, mix it up with institutionalised racism at the bank (resulting in negative loan considerations), add the clique hiring practices. Sprinkle demographics on top, and here we are. If it only was that simple.

Structural racism.

It's a mix of what everyone above has mentioned. Recruiters can also be a barrier because not all recruiters know how to seek out diverse talent. There are plenty of coding bootcamps out now that have a mix of people but recruiters may only be looking at a certain number of universities.

likeuplifting

Because most people that go into advertising are white.

SF isn't that diverse.

like

East Bay/Oakland is not SF. The question is about SF specifically. Yes SF has majority Asian and white demographic... But when I think diversity i think of a more equal ratio of all ethnicities.

If your law firm has no attorneys who are female or people of color, I’m not referring cases to your firm. It’s 2020, do better. Diversity needs to stop being seen as “a nice thing to have” and it needs to be necessary to stay in business. Diverse perspectives are how law firms succeed, I want to see more firms that understand that.

Inclusiveness vs diversity: I think internally, inclusiveness is extremely important, and advantageous to a firm. Recruiting efforts however, should be race/creed/color/protected party agnostic.
