My spouse did it for a few years, then went back to practicing. The flexibility was ok, the job was pretty routine, and the pay was no better than entry level public interest work. I agree with A1 that it’s typically a soft exit from practicing. If you can stick it out long enough and play the university politics right you might be able to use it as a stepping stone into other university positions.
My spouse was supposed to be a public interest career counselor but didn’t get much room to do any actual public interest focused employer outreach. Most of the time the office was focused on the top band of students and what firms or clerkships they could or did land at. The public interest, non-big law, and government outcomes were largely an afterthought for the career services office.
There was also a fair amount of hounding students for career outcomes at employment and 9 months after graduation for reporting purposes. If you can imaging trying to cold call a bunch of new grads with massive debt and sub-6 figure jobs to ask them questions about their employment status, then you can picture a good chunk of the job at certain times of the year.
If the school offers tuition discounts to employees and their family members it might be more worth it, but those are harder to come by these days. If they say they do, check the restrictions very carefully. It may exclude high-demand schools like b-school, or only apply to undergrad programs, or take several years to vest.
Feel free to DM if you want to discuss more.
Super helpful. Thank you so much.

Dont hold your breath on going back to practice. It's a soft exit out of practicing.
Got it. And yes that’s exactly why I’m doing it - hate practice :)
