Very fitting movie quote from “The American President”... We have serious problems and we need serious people to help solve them”! There are to many clowns on both sides that are using the wrong things to guide them. Here is the larger quote...rings pretty true! “I've known Bob Rumson for years. And I've been operating under the assumption that the reason Bob devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn't get it. Well, I was wrong. Bob's problem isn't that he doesn't get it. Bob's problem is that he can't sell it! We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things, and two things only: making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle age, middle class, middle income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family, and American values and character, and

I think the bigger picture here is how traumatized are students will be when this is over. For this generation this is their first real crisis. Many students are losing family members not only from the coronavirus but from other conditions such as cancer or other terminal diseases and not allowed to gather with family for support. All this technology is excellent but there is no replacing the human touch, a hug or a kiss from someone who shares your grief. This is going to change who they are. Teachers are always the frontline for detecting and relieving their pains and fears. My students and parents can't wait for my phone calls. I do various wellness checks per week. The kids are relieved to hear that I am well and I feel the same. Not all calls are positive we've had a couple of tragedies but being able to talk to someone who cares means more than money can buy.

I completely agree that we humans need the human touch. There is a video I saw at some point called "life is better with community." Probably you can find it with Google. It shows people trying to do group activities alone. We are not meant to be alone. I also worry how affected my students will be-esp those with disabilities. I pray for my students daily and I pray this virus is defeated sooner rather than later.

I think this crisis is showing us all that internet access is a necessity not a luxury.

Yes!!!

these are all good points. i think this will be a learning experience for all schools and they will create plans to be more prepared for when/if something like this happens again. i think it will also push schools to become more technologically advanced and push teachers to do more e-learning.

Let’s hope .... and for the better.

A part of me shudders at the thought of what administrators/administrations would come up with...

Whatever strategy our education administration proposes, we will need to be supportive, because they like many are navigating through unfamiliar waters; many of them have no solid plan, and analyzing what is the best plan for students, teachers, support staff, etc. parents and other whim it affects. Many of our standard procedures will change, how we adapt to them will be key; But we must were together. Continue to pray, seeking God for his help, that researchers, bio chemist and other medical researchers receives wisdom and knowledge to develop a vaccine or cure, for the virus in Jesus name

When situations are beyond my control, what do I do?? I simply stop, take a deep breath, and remind myself, this too shall pass. Something good always comes out of perilous times. We have been through this before. If this is what it takes to bring families together, slow down the pace of people, review priorities, make changes in ones own life, so be it. While these times are uncertain and uncomfortable for everyone, it can be a good thing. For me, it has exposed just how complacent I have become as an educator. I am not, by no means, a bad teacher, I have just become to relaxed. I need and have to do things differently, and I will because now I have to. Yes, changes will occur because of this, but hopefully, it will be for the better. Hang in there and remain hopeful!

I also believe we gonna see administration increase the cleansing of schools; maybe hiring or increasing their custodian staff, especially for continuous deep cleaning throughout the day; I believe school districts are going to clamp down on kids who are coming to school sick and they’re not going to be as lenient when students are at school; immediately notification to parents to pick up their child and once cleared with a doctors note They’ll be able to return

Or possibly when they return they may be asked to check in with the school nurse first thing for a temp check and quick exam and maybe given a mask to wear..

I think the classroom and classroom teacher will be changed forever as will the school building. Will they really be viewed as a necessity?

Wow, I love your viewpoint on buildibg relationships with students through the Internet. I love my kiddos so much because of the hugs I give them and how I look at them and notice that something is wrong. It's gonna be hard trying to personalize your relationship on the computer.

I hope that one beneficial factor that comes from this entire situation is that schools will all develop a better contingency plan to deal with any future outbreaks that may occur.

I think teachers overall will be more technologically literate. I’m an iCoach at my school and only about 40% of the teachers at my school were consistently using technology in their instruction before this. I was rarely called upon for help and that has ramped up significantly in the past week. Necessity is the mother of all invention.

Trump will get rid of the Department of Education in his second term. He will hand over control to states. During the Second Great Depression, the consequences of 23% of the nation being out of work will impact our profession in ways we can't imagine. I know one thing. You need to go from an analog mindset to a digital mindset and improve your repertoire.

Just an FYI: Common Core was the brain child of 42 state governors. It was supported by the Fed, but not created by the Fed. So if that's your argument for getting rid of Dept of Ed in favor of States, you may want to rethink... Also, I don't trust Florida legislators with education decisions without Federal oversight. Several years ago, we pass an Amendment to our Constitution that mandated smaller class sizes (no more than 18 students to an elementary classroom, no more than 22 in a middle school core and no more than 25 in a high school core). It was a citizen sponsored amendment, not a government supported one. As such, the State has worked tirelessly to undermine it to the point that I have 33 in one of my history classes and I didn't even think to address it with my administration anymore!

I can only hope so!

Maybe a strange take but I think that we should be more in touch with our internal bodies. We can send astronauts to the moon and rovers to mars but there’s no easy, portable way to scan our bodies to see what’s going on inside (e.g., a DIY full body xray or MRI). I think this could be the next gen of weighing scales that also show various health metrics, track fitness, etc. It could help with prevention and diagnosis. I guess it’s bad for health providers who make $ today from this. Thoughts?
