If I am not confident in my index funds investing skills, should I look at getting mutual funds account through a company like American Funds? I know there are yearly fees, but I feel like I will still make more money doing mutual funds than just putting in my savings account.

Index fund investing is not like day trading. You can easily google to get a list of various index fund ticker symbols and suggested proportions to guide how much you put in each. Should take less than 30 min to sort this out, then every month just buy the index funds at the proportions you set. After a year check and see how the market value of your portfolio looks and adjust the proportions for next year.

Set up a vanguard retirement fund if you’re not confident. Low expense ratio and it will be fine in the long run

I do a bit of both. Split regular contribution across index funds, target date retirement, and actively managed mutual funds (from American funds). It provides a solid level of diversification with low fees and next to no work on my part.

I would do it on your own unless you need help with other items as well - eg stocks, 401k, Roth IRA. Index funds are simple. Choose 3-4, invest and forget.

You might consider a target date fund from Vanguard or another provider OP. They are still fairly low cost, and will automagically adjust their holdings as you get closer to retirement.

Yup. Especially if we provide audit/consulting services for them

Index tends to outperform in a bull market, mutual funds might do better in a bear iirc. If you wanted mutual funds it might no longer be the optimal window. Not really any different though, you’d still have to pick which fund and your risk level. Like just make observations about the things you’d like to own. Tech has continued its tear this year, so why not XLK Or QQQ etc.

I meant it more so as passive (etf) vs active (mutual fund) management. And that’s just an anecdotal nugget of info I recall from school. In general I agree that ETFs are the way.

I know M&A has a terrible rep, but if there’s anyone who enjoys it (or at least doesn’t completely hate it), could you please say what you like about the practice? Interviewing for an M&A position and really do want to love the job, at least for a year. FYI, I’m retooling from lit, and no, staying at my current firm isn’t an option.

Hello! I have an inital call with HR coming up for a non-technical program manager role and I’m anticipating the expected total comp question. I’m coming from a non-tech background so I’m not sure what would be reasonable. Not sure what L level this role would be (it’s titled just Program Manager). Role would be in the Bay Area (currently live in DC). I’ve got 10 YOE, mostly in the government (3 in consulting). Any insight would be helpful!
