If I bill 2400-2500 a year (corporate/M&A) what percentile would you all say that puts me national percentile wise for all big law associates? I know there’s some nuts who bill 3000 a year but I figure they have a screw loose…maybe I do too? Lol.

Top 1% if you’re actually averaging 2400-2500 over multiple years.

Take a look at Chambers Associate data on average associate billable hours. Among firms that reported average associate billable hours, not one of them had an average that was over 2,000.

I agree. At all but the sweatiest of shops, 2400+ over multiple years is outlier territory. A partner showed me hours data at the end of last year and there were only a handful of associates over 2300 or so firm wide.

Top 10%

Source - i bill numbers around this at a top 5 busy shop and am consistently near the top of the group though always some people having freaky 2800 years, usually not the same people year over year

2400 is enough at my firm for a “extra” bonus and is way above the average for my group (corp) and associates generally. I did it last year and was on track to do it again but I left 😶 be careful about burn out…

Tips for billing properly? I feel like I'm constantly working yet not billing enough of it. I know you never bill 100% of the time worked, but I don't think I'm doing it right (I'm a first year). E.g. I find it difficult to switch timers each time I respond to an email so I tend to forget.

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that firms require a minimum daily time entry? For example, my firm requires us to bill 6 hours a day, whether or not it’s billable work, we have to have a minimum of 6.0 in our time entry system every day or we get flagged. If we’re on vacation we have to pre-bill 6.0 a day. Why the hell do firms do this???
