If I don’t want to make partner (don’t love business development) and just want to practice law, what options do I have? Midlevel in BL right now and looking for a path that is not up or out.

Does your firm have an of counsel role?

like

Yes but seems like it’s not a permanent position - most of counsel either become partners or get pushed out

like

Of counsel? That means different things at different BL firms, but a lot of excellent BL forms have this track. Especially if you’re very good at what you do. Some BL forms are up or out though, so you may be wanting to look for a new firm with a different culture.

Why disliking BD?

Get a recruiter and lateral to a firm with a robust counsel-level role or a staff attorney or other non-partner track position. Big firms sometimes trumpet these roles, but not always. Smaller firms also may be a good option. A strong recruiter in your area should know.

Does anyone seriously considered leaving law every single day? I thought I was going through a phase but every single day I think “I don’t think I’m happy”. Trying to figure out if this is normal or a phase. I have also been to 3 different firms in a year. I made a mistake of leaving a firm I really liked and I’m not sure if I will ever be happy at another firm.

Help me think through this decision please.

Gov attorney, 8 years out of law school and will make over $100k for the first time this year. Gov benefits are great and WLB is amazing (I have a wife and child). We are less than 2 hours from all of our collective family now. I have an offer with a small firm I am highly interested in. $165k base + bonus for only 1800 billable hours, but it is 8+ hours from our families. $90k in student loan debt left. Am I wrong for wanting to take the money?

My firm is really behind the 8 ball in hiring support staff and would rather have attorneys use their time doing non-billable admin work. For whatever reason, they just can’t wrap their head around the math, which is that the attorneys would bill more if they didn’t have to do non-billable admin work and that billable work would not only cover the cost of a paralegal but add the the profits of the firm! Anyone have a similar experience? If so, how do you show them the light!
