If I exit to IB at a smaller bank can I eventually move to bulge bracket after a year or two or is my best bet only a top MBA

To be clear, if you are good at diligence (not just a green senior working in the background) and interacting with bankers on your deals, you can make this switch. Just worked with a UBS guy that is making VP and came from PWC deals. He mentioned they were looking for diligence folks given his success story (tried to recruit me). Make connections, raise your hand for the tough projects, and go out of your way to be useful on sell-sides when you are in the trenches with bankers. Anyone that says you can't make this switch is projecting their own inadequacy.

Can I pivot from M&A tax to IB without going MBA route?

like

I also work in m&a tax and I am struggling to make the switch. Been told that for IB I at least need some FDD experience, and for FDD I at least need some financial / audit experience. So I just don't know how to make it happen.

Think about it this way, nothing is impossible. However, your competition at the level you are going is top tier MBA grads and other bulge bracket people who are competing for the same position. What moves you there will come down to your network and how you can get to talk to someone without going through the regular application process.

But hey once you get tired of that banker life and want to think about Corp dev, hit me up.

helpful

SA1 - on salary range, I don't know how applicable this is to you but I stepped into the Corp dev world as a Sr manager making a bit under 200k base. Honestly have no info on how much a Sr could expect. Geography obviously play a role too and for what it's worth I'm in a HCOL area.

To answer OP’s question, 100% can. I work in IB. It’s not super common but not uncommon either especially in current market.

That’s right. Tons of folks making a move from big 4 to IB just so they can work even more 😝

I overheard a small law firm owner saying he will never hire women because the last female attorney he hired ended up being pregnant, and left the firm immediately after her maternity leave was over. How is this kind of discrimination still going on? How could we address this? One thing I can think of is mandatory parental leave regardless of gender, but I doubt it’ll ever happen in the US.
