If I foresee a move to a new city in a few years, is it better to be proactive and lateral to a firm in my current city that has an office in the city I plan on moving to? I wonder if it makes sense to take advantage of the hot lateral market now, and then just switch offices instead of firms when the time comes. Thoughts?

Would lateraling to that firm help you take on work servicing clients in new city? How flexible is working between offices at the other firm? Some firms have way more flexible internal arrangements than others.

I really don’t know the answer to any of these questions - and I’m not sure how I could find out before I apply to said firm (there isn’t one specifically in mind yet)

Yeah sounds like good questions to ask in interview process. But if the offices are their own islands or your practice group isn’t as active in new city, a switch doesn’t seem as useful.

I feel burnt out and that I haven’t been genuine. I do many (60+) hours of work weekly for the benefit of the few. My spouse has spent 4 yrs in major market biglaw. She has always been interested in public policy/government work and went to law school to do that work. After 2016 election, left DC and did corporate. Now she wants to go back and has had several interviews over the past 5 months with a major DC law firm/lobbying firm. Final round interview in Dec went really well. No response for a month, no response to follow up emails. Is this just holiday delay or should she consider this opp dead?
