Youre kind of stuck there now. Go ahead and secure the offer first and then see if you can negotiate up after that.

You can try but may fail. I’d say something like: after going through interviews, I’ve got a better understanding of what the role entails. When I benchmark it to similar positions, I think the appropriate range is $x-y. (You will need to be able to back that up with some internet data)

Is there anyway to have this as a phone call discussion? I find it easier to make these asks on calls because it helps you control the flow of the conversation. You can say what M1 above said and then stay quiet to give them a chance to respond. If they ask for references, then you can speak to them. If they agree, follow up on an email restating the agreement on the increase and the amount agreed on to ‘formalize’ it in case they try to renege.

In my opinion, if you originally asked for 70-80K, then asked for 10K more, that's fine. Asking for another 10-20K on top of that seems excessive

You’ll get a salary of $90001

You can always negotiate if you have leverage. Your only leverage here is not taking the job. FWIW, if I were on then other side of this table I’d pull the offer.

If the hiring manager had to get an exception for the first offer, it's pretty much guaranteed that they're not going to back to get a second exception for the same job. When people ask you what you want, you should just tell them to avoid situations like this. Why waste each other's time to get an offer you don't want

like

Be selfish but also know you are risking losing the offer and your relationship with that employer.

If you can afford to play hardball, refuse the $90-100 offer and insist on $110-120. Just say your situation has changed and now you will only accept if you have $110-120

like

Emphasis on if you can afford to. Meaning you don’t really need this job. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can get them to cave because you “think” you’re the perfect fit. There is always someone out there better qualified, especially now.

like

You did anchor them at 90k and expect an offer at or slightly below this. If you can afford to say no, tell them after reflecting on what it would take to switch, you want to revisit comp at 115k. Recruiter might be pissed but keep your story simple if you are willing to walk

like

Boo, you gave a range that they met. What’s the prob?

funny

It depends. In my experience, some firms have negotiating room ( or are willing to negotiate) also they may be able to bring you in at a higher level e.g manager i/o SC depending on the what was approved. No harm in asking but are you willing to accept 90-100?

How much did they offer you? I would let it be and perform well. Once you’re in for about a year, find a competitor offer with hopes for them to match

How many YOE do you have?

I’m being promoted to Manager this November but recent got offer from a fintech. In money term the manager base pay is 5k greater than the new role but i’m negotiating to match the offer with my Manager salary. Should I wait until promoted or move asap? Question— do you share your comp with close friends? Me and my roommate have been friends forever and while I don’t really share my specific pay, Im not sure if I should share it with her. When she got promoted she told me her comp tho I didn’t ask. Today I found out I was promoted (🎉) and left that part out. She asked me if I knew what my raise would be and I just told her the % but not the actual amount. Is that unnecessarily secretive? We’re in diff industries too.
