If I grab lunch or coffee with a Principal in order to learn more about his work and potentially change to his line, do we pay separately, do I pay for him or does he pay for me? This is first meeting

Start to take your wallet out, they will say oh no I’ve got this, act pleasantly surprised and “thank you so much”

Very nice of your to be thoughtful. Yea like others have said, offer to pay but he / she will most likely offer to pick up the tab. Just say thanks and move on. The firm has a budget for this type of thing.

Thanks y’all for the response. I kept wondering at first because 1) the protocol is usually the higher up person usually pays but then 2) he is already spending his time to drive there and just meet 1-1 with me to discuss about what I want to do.

Now, a boss move would be to insist on paying with your personal card and say “please, I asked for your time and I appreciated our chat, how about next time?!”....A Partner will remember that...

Is it appropriate though?

If you asked for the meeting you should pay. He will most likely pay, but it’s good form to offer

They usually have budgets for things like this. It’s called people development or something. So like others said you should offer but he should pay. If he doesn’t he’s just pocketing his budget and he’s just cheap.
