Here is my understanding:
Equity refreshes happen annually in January.
You have to have worked at G for a full year to be eligible. If you start in May 2022, you won’t be eligible in January 2023.
Therefore, you will first be eligible for a refresher grant in January 2024. This is what I’ve heard from multiple people, but, I’m also a Noogler so I could be wrong.
I just rechecked internal policy to be sure and it says, “Nooglers are not modeled for a refresh grant during their first annual compensation cycle”. Which would be end of this year, 2022, and eligible in the next one, 2023.
Tell them that’s inconsistent with what Googlers are saying the policy is
Unless they’ve changed it very recently, you should be eligible in Dec 2023 to receive the refresher grant, but they’d start vesting in Q1/Jan 2024

FYI, there's a non-zero chance that your manager awards a discretionary equity grant at the end of your first year. I started in H2 '21 and received a (very small) equity grant with my first perf cycle.
On another note, my recruiter told me that I could expect at least the value of my initial grant as a refresher every year which isn't remotely true. I wouldn't be shocked if your recruiter is also misunderstanding our equity policies.
Is the base refresh for a level / ladder / location well known?
It doesn’t say it on your contract, but it says it on the few other sheets they send along with the contract that explains how they calculate RSUs.
My Google recruiter said similar things. I guess they just want you to sign asap lol
Oh so there is a chance that one would get RSU refresher after 2 years…?😳 or just the recruiter misunderstanding
The answer is, it depends. IF you are a noogler and have an EE+ rating you will be modeled for equity refresh, so if you're a high performer it's possible you can get a refresh grant award in Dec '22. You'll have been here for > 6 months, so it is possible, depending on your role, team, manager, your performance, etc. Note, the key word is "modeled". There is some discretion so it's possible your manager could give you a small grant, but again, depends on team, role, manager, performance, etc. If you have CME+ next year (2023), you'll be modeled for an equity refresh in Dec 2023 as others have stated.
Yes, this is how it works. Note that it is hard to get EE+ rating in the first perf cycle (you would need to get EE rating in September, which is 3 months of effective work).
