If I know I have a meeting to get discharged, should I put my two weeks in or just wait and get terminated?

Terminated gets you unemployment and it's a strong employment market right now

like

Let them terminate you so you can collect unemployment benefits while you look for another job

like

To those people saying they wouldn’t want to explain it, Explain what? That you were switching jobs and they found out and terminated you? Who gives. I’d collect unemployment/severance (though I know OPs situation is diff).

like

Agree, I’d wait until after the meeting and then quit when you get the new offer. That way you can get severance and also do nothing for your last two weeks. If you ever get asked if you were fired, you can say that when you were changing firms, your former employer let you go. But odds are it will never come up because there are no gaps on your resume.

Have the option of severance and/or unemployment. Let them do the dirty work.

like

OP, is there any reason to believe you might get severance pay, perhaps it’s part of the firm’s culture or they’re worried you’ll sue and so they offer a claims release?

The richest I ever felt was the week I got severance (knew the department was all getting laid off) and a signing bonus for my new job the next day. The timing was perfect.

Good luck!

like

They might be worried I would sue and thank you!

Personally I would put in 2 weeks notice. I just wouldn’t want to have to explain it at some unknown point in the future.

like

They are savvy, they now ask if you ever got fired, were asked to resign, or resigned to avoid being fired (words to that effect).

like

If everything goes right, I will have a new job by the end of the week. So, idk if that makes a difference to the analysis.

like

I’ve lost many jobs and never had to explain. It’s illegal for the old job to say anything other than dates that I worked there.

like

I would find something to complain to HR about so you have protected activity then let them term you - can collect UI and or maybe get some severance

likefunny

Yessssss

I’d have a resignation letter ready to hand in.

like

Fuck the bad advice. Get fired and negotiate tooth and nail for 3 months severance

Hi Sharks,

I have got an offer with Capgemini.

They are postponing my joining stating a strange BGV pending issue.

I have lost a months salary already. Still there is no confirmation on joining date

Can I put my papers within a month of joining Capgemini? Will there be any problem if I do so? And how many months of notice will be applicable if I put my papers within a month of joining Capgemini?

Not really sure where to ask this so I guess here is where I’ve settled on. I woke up this morning to a text from my husband asking me to not be on my phone while he’s trying to fall back asleep in the night because he’s too sensitive to the light. Except it’s not like I want to be awake either? I just couldn’t sleep. He didn’t say anything while he was awake, which lasted about ten minutes based on his snoring. Does anyone else have this issue? Is there an easy compromise?

I work at a very small boutique and have represented several law firms in disciplinary proceedings and against claims in litigation. I recently learned that some very large law firms have in-house counsel offices and would be interested in parlaying this into joining one of those groups. Is that doable? Do most of those in-house groups hire from within the firm? Are lawyers considered part of the in-house group but are also practicing law for externals clients on behalf of the firm?

A question for the associates:
How should I talk to a new associate on my team (4 mos.) about critical issues including 1) spending too much time on a single project; 2) not meeting expectations in terms of number of billable hours; 3) botching easy procedural issues? This person has significant skills and writes very well. But their work is consistently turned in at the last minute, they have to be corrected on procedures regularly, and they never come talk to me without an invitation.

I applied for a government attorney job in September and got an interview. In late October I was told I wasn’t the top choice but was on the list and would definitely get the job eventually. There are many attorneys there who have that position. So it’s not like I’m waiting for one specific attorney to retire. I was told last week that there probably wouldn’t be an opening for me before March. Have other people had to wait a long time for a government job opening?
