If I let go last week (I was not on PIP but they said my performance was lower than peers), what would be the best way to disclose during next job interview? Can i say laid off? Or i would need to say “fired”

I was also let go a few weeks ago. I’m actually interviewing with Deloitte now and offered them my recent reviews plus YE review so they wouldn’t think I was a poor performer. They told me to not worry about it as they know EY is doing layoffs and are not fooled by the “performance separations”.

@ey8 it was a joke from when the EY guidance said PDFs were unmodifiable. I guess I forgot to put the /s. that's on me

Laid off i would think. Esp since covid is still around its acceptable

So far I had 2 interviews this week and no one asked me why I left EY or want to leave EY. I will not bring this first but am ready to address this question including references from people with whom I worked

like

I've been telling recruiters/companies I was laid off and no one bats an eye in the current environment. And when verifying your employment at EY, they won't know if you quit or were let go anyway.

like

They can ask, EY won't tell them. They made it very clear on my separation call that they will only verify the time frame that I worked there, as well as title I believe.

like

I would actually be surprised if you are asked but you were laid off. Everyone knows what the deal is right now...

like

If i move to different public accounting firm, they might ask “why do you change from ey to other public accounting”

Covid-related business decision?

Why the need to say anything. Does EY not have a policy that does not allow them to say you were let go? I’m asking because Deloitte does. Many leave public with no plan and its over feeling overwhelmed with the hours/burned out.

like

Yes agree! I’m not saying you will not have to explain with you left EY. I’m just saying you can say it’s other reasons, you don’t have to mention it’s due to poor performance.

I’ve been in similar boats. You don’t need to disclose why you left unless being asked. Your previous employer (EY) does not have any right to disclose to other people (say, an inquiring recruiter) the reason of your separation - the previous employer can only confirm your employment start and end date. So hopefully this helps you come up with an answer with integrity when asked the question

like

Understood - what I did at the time was to look back at my experience with the previous employer. Typically when these separations happen, the causes are not always one-sided - think about what experience you wanted, what work style fits you, what kind of professional culture you would thrive in, and what was lacking and why your previous employer was not a good fit for you to succeed. Yes it’s a blow on your confidence and self-esteem; but you should believe that you will thrive in the right environment and this is a good opportunity to leave what didn’t fit you and find the right fit. I’d do some soul searching if I were you - it’d be a lot easier to face the recruiters once you learn what works for you, because you would be giving honest answers than trying to hide behind word games. Best of luck :)

Equity I'm having trouble determining how much equity the "sales" cofounder should get. I'm the one who provides the actual content / strategy of the business. Atm the new sales cofounder will help with branding etc. I have a hard time to award such a cofounder a large sum of equity since I'm the one who is designing the services etc. The cofounder does not provide actual input, but is more of a soundboard. Is there a rule of thumb for deviding stock? Anyone who had this situation before?

What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?
