How do you deal with counter offers? I have an offer to join a larger tech company in a more senior role, with bonus and RSUs that my current start up can’t match. But my current company want me to stay. They offered an increased base salary which is still below the new offer and I went back and said no, so they might increase. Articling student in Canada (8 month internship with potential hireback), currently doing transactional work. I’m WFH and having a hard time building relationships with partners. I’m friendly/chat with associates and am on great terms with one partner who gives me work often, but not much else. The firm “encourages” reaching out to partners to chat, though I’ve tried and been essentially ignored. Partners rarely have enough time to give me feedback, so I feel they don’t have time to chat.

Pros and cons of disclosing your new firm when you give notice? Should I tell them when they inevitably ask? Love my current firm (am law 100) but going to a top 10.

Are the partners that you interview with during a lateral callback generally the ones you’ll end up working with? There were a few partners I would have liked to interview with but didn’t get to and I wonder if that means they weren’t interested or don’t have a need.

If partners from certain practice groups KNOW that our practice is completely buried and that associates are working beyond capacity, why do they like to act as if their deal is the only deal we are on?

I feel so many of my big law co-workers purchase homes $1M+ homes as senior associates but I always struggle to believe that I will be able to do the same. I started saving aggressively this year as a midlevel but still feel so far away to be able to comfortably afford. Additionally, I always have a fear of job loss due to my own parents losing their jobs in 2008 and essentially growing up with no resources.

What are other people’s experiences?

Does everyone in Big Law feel like constantly chasing the "next step" hoping that accomplishing it will (and it does not) create a sense of fulfillment or change things up, whether in professional sense or generally in life?
