If I saved my salary for a couple years, without paying for any expenses, couldn’t you buy a house cash? Has anyone did this?

Idk how you get an expense free life but lmk. Depends on your salary, but if you net 350k after taxes and don’t have any expenses, sure you could buy a 650k house for cash in a couple years…

likefunny

Historically, borrowing has been nearly free in a market that was going bananas, so buying in cash would have been dumb financially (I don't discredit the emotional benefits). Also, you just planning on mooching off your parents?

I don't understand what you're asking because it sounds like "if I save X amount, can I buy something that costs X dollars" but that's too obvious.

What is this question?

I think you’re asking if it makes sense to bit a house with cash, (doesn’t really matter how you amassed the cash).

Answer is it depends, if rates were really low like two years ago, then it might make sense to purchase in cash and then finance it after. One of my properties had a 2.5% interest rate, I can get better returns than that with zero risk right now , and probably significantly better returns over a longer period with some risk.

Suppose it is possible, but I would question if the lifestyle of “no expenses” is one that would make you happen while you save everything to be able to buy the house. You have to live a little along the way for your sanity.

My wife and I are working on preparing a good down payment for a home in a couple of years. Right now I have been maxing out 401k and Roth IRA, but considering to reduce those contributions in order to build up for a down payment. Currently own a townhome, and this approach would allow me to rent out my current place instead of using the equity for a partial down payment. Is sacrificing the retirement accounts for a couple of years worth it? I think so, but would like to hear other ideas.

I recently got a new job that now exceeds the $129,000 limit to be qualified for roth IRA. The company confirmed they have traditional and roth 401k, but do not support any other backdoors. Is my best bet here then to roll over from Roth IRA into Roth 401k, or keep the IRA as is but not invest more?

Goal right now is to save as much as I can and max out within 3y for marriage/kids (been already maxing out 401ks throughout career, and recently HSA until the new job, in which I will have an FSA)

Wow I didn’t expect my networth to be crossing 200K already. I feel so lucky and grateful! 🥳

Newer to the game compared to many of you, trying to decide if splitting 401k contribution between traditional and Roth is worth it.
Let’s assume I am not in a higher income tax bracket at retirement (current base is 100). Is it still worth it to split contributions between Roth or traditional (6% trad to get match, rest would be Roth)? Some different proportion split? TIA.
