If I sell all my stocks now (at a loss) but later buyback at lower price, I am sill better off right? Just making sure I’m not missing anything..

If it were me, I would just hold it. And maybe buy more at the lower price.

A lot of the day to day fluctuation is while the marketsb are closed. If you are trying to play the day to day volatility you should have sold right before close yesterday.

Are you approaching retirement age? If not hold on. Don’t ride the rollercoaster if you can’t take the ups and downs...

The environment is temporary. Our economy is strong, yes companies will take a 2nd qrt hit but as far instrinsic value is concerned the market will go back up.... it always does. Just don’t look and check back in 6 months.

OP... please don't try to time the market. Read up on efficient market theory, it states that prices are reflective of all known information and an investor can't sustainably beat the market.

Given that VIX is at 52 right now, there are far too many unknowns, emotional trading, and algorithmic influences happening. It's IMPOSSIBLE to know your outcome if you sell now. The market could jump 5% tomorrow and you'd be on the sidelines watching.

Like others have said, keep to the dollar cost averaging strategy and continue to buy periodically regardless of market up- or down-trends.

like

You can. Buy buying more now. But that’s the only way.

Yes, you're not missing anything. That's the gamble. What if today was the bottom? You'd never recover those losses.

likehelpful

Agreed. I thought about doing that for 4 times. But did not do it lol. I should have lol

like

Keep buying. Market always rebounds eventually. You can't time it, but you can buy on sale (like today)

like

Agree. Buy some of those companies with strong balance sheets and it doesn't matter that their oil companies. They'll rebound.

If it is in a taxable brokerage account you may lose the character (take long term losses then have short term gains if you buy and sell later). Also you would be subject to wash sale rules if you sell for loss now and buy back within 30 days.

like

Im doing it for my Roth. I think there should be not adverse effect assuming I can buy back my shares at lower price? Even if I have loss already?

Remember wash sale rules.

As others have said, I generally just buy more in the dips to lower my average basis and break even point. Obviously you need to keep some capital on the sidelines for this to work.

like

All you have to do is time the market and you’ll make crazy money.

Only if the market goes down

Down 3% today, in hindsight would have worked. I wouldn't do it now though.

Recent grad looking to refi ~60k in private student loans. I’ve qualified for a decent rate - currently paying around 5% but through refi I can get between 3% to just under 4%. I can’t decide on the sliding scale amount (interest vs monthly payment trade off) to go with. If I keep my current monthly payment that puts me at 3.46% - which is great - but wondering if I should be more/less aggressive. I have another 40k in federal loans that I’m not currently touching due to current relief. TIA!

My wife has approved H4 extension notice (i-797) and we just filed her first ever H4 EAD last week. She need to travel to India for medical reasons and she will need to have H4 visa stamped in order to immigrate to the US.
Our concern is, will it affect her i-765 application as she will receive a new i-94 and H4 Visa which will differ from already filed i-765?
In that case, does she have to wait out in India till her H4-EAD is processed in order to avoid i-94 mismatch?
Appreciate your help!
