If I start at a Big 4 in October and my wife is due in March of next year do you think I can take advantage of the 16 week paternity leave? Or will it be too early for me to be eligible?

I’ve been at my firm 5+ years and had our first child mid-busy season. I took a week of PTO when she was born. My wife took he maternity leave while I finished busy season and I took mine starting in May when she went back to work. It worked out perfectly.

like

Men do not get sixteen weeks. Pwc has 8 weeks paternity leave. A woman giving birth can get up to 6 months paid with disability sick time and paternity. I do not know all the details on the female side as I am a male. You can take your paternity leave when ever you want within the first year. And you can break it up. Mu suggestion would be to take half up front to help when the child is born and half when your wife’s maternityleave is up to save on child care. That is just my plan for my next child. But it’s really up to your personal need. As to your March question it depends on what group your are in on how problematic taking off in March is. In asset management this could be an issue as there are a lot of dead lines in March, that said I would. Suggest and early discussion like day 2 with your manager.

At ey men do get 16 weeks

You’d be eligible. Haven’t seen any men take the full 16 weeks so that’ll be interesting

like

I will be taking 16 weeks in the spring as well

You would not be eligible at EY. You need to have been employed for 12 months when the qualifying event occurs to take it.

like

Yeah I thought this was the rule at Deloitte too

You'll be eligible a second year was able to take the full time. He came back early. Wasn't really utilized then went back on it.

like

Agree with others that you will likely be eligible at 1 year or service. However, it can be takem anytime in the first year or the baby's life. How long is your wife's maternity leave? I would take vacation for the initial time of birth and then take the 16 weeks starting in October. The firm may be flexible and let you start it earlier to avoid you being out during busy season. Several men of varying levels have taken the full leave in my office. Typically they take 2-4 weeks at birth and the rest when their wife goes back to work.

like

Is this your first child OP? If so, are you sure that you want to take the full16 weeks? Back when I had my first the firm only offered one week of paid time off and I felt like that was plenty, I was ready to go back to work.

@SM2 - yes but you need to qualify for this benefit and I believe it’s a year at the firm.

I plan on spreading out the use of my 16 weeks. Don’t plan on taking 4 months off altogether but I do want to be able to use it. Just wanted to make sure I would be eligible in Feb 2021 even though I would have started only a few months back

I think you will need to meet the 1 yr service. reach out to leave management.

It seems partners are much more flexible with associates who have kids than with those who don’t. If it’s okay for my colleague with a kid to leave at 5 pm and log on later, why isn’t that the same for me (no kids)? My obligations might be different, but I still have a life and want to be able to do certain things, like catch that evening workout class or cook dinner for my partner. As you can probably tell, my firm is operating 100% in person. There is no point here — I’m just whining.
