I would say leave earlier. I’m a senior and just gave my notice at the firm, but when starting the job search process, I initially was looking for FP&A roles. What I learned was at a senior position, they’re looking for those who already have modeling and forecasting and budgeting experience, essentially they don’t want to have to teach these “basics” to a senior hire. On the other hand, I will say there was one FP&A role where the hiring manager really liked me, but before speaking with them, their recruiter loved my audit background but wanted to confirm with said hiring manager if they would want to move forward with interviewing me knowing I didn’t have direct experience in FP&A, but rather had experience testing, reviewing and analyzing forecasts, for example. I feel it’s more rare from my own experience, but if you have a strong resume and they like you in the interviews, if they want you, they’ll work to get you. Hope this helps!

You should start your job search now because senior FP&A roles will come up and some places will take a second year associate from PA. Especially close to your senior promotion.
