I would honestly find 3-5 great PE/GE funds and invest ~25m as an LP. Find funds that have coinvest rights and invest the other $25m in deals you like. If you do this, I’d aim for some experience at a PE or GE fund so you have a better idea of the over performing funds in the space and some experience thinking critically about deals.
I work for a family office that has found significant success utilizing this strategy

I would try to get direct investing experience so you can learn to think critically about a deal. I imagine the skill set it’s too different. The hardest part is probably knowing which funds are crushing it and getting access. I imagine your family has some great connections in this space already. This will be your huge competitive advantage. If not, get in with family office inner circles—they pass around deal flow quite a bit and really help each other out. It’s worth exploring if you aren’t familiar

Yes I am
Depending on the types of assets your family office is planning to invest in the answer will probably differ. If looking to invest in public markets only then HF, if looking to invest in private markets then PE / VC
@A1: I thought about that too but felt like the network from HSW would be very American centric. Almost no one I know at MFs in Asia has an MBA since they don’t require analysts in the region to go back to schools for promotion

Depends on what the family mandate is. If it’s about wealth creation in a risk adjusted basis, direct PE investment is likely the best (initial) experience that you can benefit from.
Many family office will not get touched until family office is too mature due to loss ratios. And even then, it’s as part of LP/co-invest.

Sorry, meant to say that many family offices will not touch VC investments until they are well along in their journey (pretty mature and sophisticated) due to the high loss ratios
Rich people are already rich, they don’t really like too speculative investments - PE is more prevalent than VC
