If I wanted to transition from being a regular practicing attorney to being a mortgage broker is there any value to being a mortgage broker with a law license (I.e. would be able to handle the closing if needed)

In my experience where the really good brokers-recovering lawyers add value is by spotting issues before outside counsel is involved. For example knowing to ask for a copy of the recourse carveouts as part of term sheet negotiation and knowing where the carveouts are off market or should be moved above the line. Some really really really good brokers-recovering lawyers will also stay involved in negotiations by reading the substantive docs and making smart business comments informed by their legal experience.

Whether or not you will have clients who know to appreciate the effort and understand the value you deliver is a different Q.

I’m at a small law firm (2 partners; I’m the only associate) doing a mix of real estate lit, construction lit, commercial RE closings, co-op/condo law, representing developers of residential high rises in NYC, commercial foreclosures, and some general commercial lit. For those of you in commercial real estate groups at big firms, what do your hours usually look like? How frequently are you working nights & weekends? I’m entertaining some interview offers from bigger firms and wondering how anomalous my current experience is (4th associate, for reference).
