If I was going to make a transition to another firm (possibly Tier 2 or Big 4), when would be an appropriate time to do so? I have about 9 months of experience with IBM thus far. Wait 2 years? Less?

There is no magic timeline. The real answer is as soon as you can. However, the more important thing you should think about is what skill sets are hot in the market and in demand and how long will it take you to get exposure into it. Having a good skill set is the best way to jump tiers. Having a few months or couple of years of generic consulting won’t wow a firm that can hire the next potential rockstar from an ivy.

A1: Now raises the question... how difficult it may be for an IBMer to make that type of transition? I wonder which firms are more accepting of entry level consultants from a firm like mine vs. firms that would automatically deny

I think big 4 is very accepting of someone with your background, they are always hiring giving their size. Just find someone to refer you. Tier 2/MBB will be harder obviously, but with the right networking anything is possible. I find that people often make gross extrapolations based off anecdotal evidence on here or WSO when the reality is way less straight forward... i would start by developing a list of firms you want to target and the specific office/practice. Then look for thought pieces/white papers published by that group. Then reach out to lower down authors (not the partners who “wrote” it) and talk about the article (don’t bring up the networking for a referral in the first email)... if you want to really be successful, open up your geographical and practice limitations and presume a <10% response rate going in

I’m an incoming AC1 at Bain and I have spent the summer studying a bit for the GMAT since we had a stipend. I took it with no practice and received a 640. For those of you who left big 4 for industry - I’m seeing a lot of people saying they got 30% + raises when leaving. How did you find these jobs willing to pay that much more? Looking to leave at the M1 level and having trouble finding anything with much more than a 10-15% increase in base comp. from my current salary. Would it be dumb to leave for that low of a percentage increase? Some are offering equity in addition to the base comp. but hard to put a specific value to that now.

What does the Investor Relations career path look like for someone coming in at an early-ish level? If all the top consulting firms made anonymous decks or gave anonymous pitches to a client, eg no branding and the client did not know which firm made which deck, do you actually think that the client would prefer MBB?
