Don’t negotiate if this includes overtime (it probably does). You don’t have a lot of leverage but at that low, you can stay and eat dinner on the company’s dime every night and earn time and a half....
I’ll add...it’s a tough job market out there right now, especially for junior creatives. If it has overtime and it’s a place you feel you can learn and grow, take it. Ask for a 6 month review.
Without overtime ask for 45.
I would at least go 45-50k esp in ny.
Why are junior roles making salaries in the 30k’s?? I thought the market was terrible 5 years ago when I entered and I got 50k. Never did NYC, but is it even possible to pay rent and train fare there every month on that kind of salary?
Lol not a chance I was making 55k +OT and after rent/ loans/ train/ food/ and utilities i still wasn’t in a great position
Grey 1 as of Jan 1 you have to make over 55k to not have overtime so they could negotiate up to 54.9k and still make time and a half for each hour over 40 a week
My first job after an internship/school offered me $30k. I took it to build the experience and 4 years later I’m at $75k. It’s terrible it takes this long to make decent money but unfortunately that’s reality. I’m not even sure if I’m at a decent salary right now 😂
Thats low. Ask for at least 10k or more or turn it away.
That’s an awful salary. Some agencies in NYC are bullshit for that, they think because it’s NYC everyone should be *dying* to work there. Out of grad school a job in NYC offered 45k, no negotiation. Turned them down flat, they were so shocked I could possibly not be desperate to live in NYC.
Correction- 58,500k is minimum to not get overtime
Is $58,500k a NY specific amount? Or is that national? I haven’t seen anything about a chance and thought it was $48k or thereabouts
@grey2 so if you make under that they have to give you ot?
Yes
Also just to be clear you deserve much more than this. Hopefully with overtime you’d make between 50-60.
$50k, expecting you’ll get $45k
If it’s a good agency where you can build a book, take it. You not only *might* suck, by the numbers, you *probably* suck. The fact a good agency might pay you almost 40k to find out is incredible.
Nah. Finding out whether they suck is what the internship they’re currently doing there is for.
That’s an offensive offer - I would ask for $60-$65 + a private jet to use as your creative think tank 😎
I started at $32,500. Sucked, but I did it for 10 months, made myself indispensable to my team, and got an offer elsewhere for 50k and asked them to match it.
Counter with 60 that’s what I started out with in nyc after an internship as a junior
I started at $40k. Most other AE’s at my office are $37-40k.
I started at 43k you can get more.
@grey 2 is that a NYC rule? I make under that in Chicago and have never been given OT?
We have the same law in Chicago / Illinois and use it over here.
i graduated in May and took a job at 45k at a smaller agency. I get overtime which helps a lot. (NYC)
What agency is it though? Top tier agencies offer lower salaries because of the personal equity the job will provide. it’s great on a resume
