If im burned out from advertising, and seeing a youtube preroll makes me wanna launch my head into the monitor, will watching Madmen for the first time reignite some passion? Or will it launch me further into madness?

Profession aside, it’s the best show ever made

No. The Larry Sanders Show is the best TV show.

like

so good - hearing the advertising bits is cool (we hear of Y&R, Grey, BBDO, McCann, etc) but the real draw of the show is character development

And if you’re a woman it will make you want to rage. Because you’ll realize not all that much has changed. 🙂🔥

Double, triple, quadruple yes to that.

One of the best shows ever made. It’s about as good narratively as TV gets; feels both like a work of, and reflection on, the midcentury literary tradition of folks like John Cheever and Raymond Carver.

But definitely don’t watch it for career inspiration. I think if that’s what you look for you’ll only end up finding a deep emptiness there (which is kind of the main thesis).

like

Good thought. Definitely see some “Swimmer” in Draper.

like

Don’t watch it because of your job.

Watch it because it’s peak TV at its finest: great writing, acting, production, everything.

I don’t get why people get down on their jobs in advertising. We’re not saving the world but neither are the bankers. It’s a fun job. It’s actually really fun. I mean, I get paid a lot to think up ideas. So what if some of them are about soap?

Mad men is hills and valleys. Overall a great show but not all good and not a motivator to get into advertising.

likehelpful

I couldn’t watch Mad Men. First episode for me (friend was watching) was the ketchup campaign, and at the end the account guy says, “And, if you don’t like it, we can try something else” and I wanted to reach through the screen and choke the actor.

So I was like, “Why the F do I wanna watch a show that reminds me of work?”

likehelpful

Then definitely don’t watch “The Pitch.”

likefunny

I'd say Billions will get you more pumped to kick ass. Mad Men was kinda sad.

likehelpful

I liked it much more than succession. I'd say sit down and watch an episode. You'll know pretty quick if you're into it.

Watch True Detective if you haven't watched it yet. Madmen is pretty mediocre.
Neither will help you love advertising tho. Sorry.

like

True detective s1 was good but the other seasons were awful. Mad Men is objectively known as one of the greatest tv shows in history. Be wary of your opinions reflecting badly on you.

Mad Men is make believe. Find your purpose.

Just hoping it could make me believe—looking for that adlife blue pill.

Succession / Fargo Szn 1-3 / Sopranos / Better Call Saul / Ozark / Search Party
In no particular order

I wonder if part of the fun of Mad Men was watching it live with the whole ad community. I don’t think I’d enjoy it half as fun if I was watching it on my own with no one to talk about each episode with.

like

I did love watching Mad Men each week. Series was on when I lived in Austin and the Alamo Drafthouse would play it every week. So much fun

It does inspire me and romanticize it for me which I love and appreciate. It makes the office drama and the pitches and extra hard work seem valiant and artistic and even somewhat respectable. So it helps me get fired up about my job a little, sure. It’s amazing to think you have a little Don or Peggy or even Ginsberg in you sometimes.

But one thing that experience in the biz has taught me upon rewatching is to not romanticize or overlook the suffering, the politics, and the long hours. It’s a cool job either way. We get paid to think of ideas. But it’s hard to glorify getting abused by your employer.

And personally, I thought Peggy was insane for not taking the opportunity to get out and write movies with Joan instead.

likehelpful

ah crap, sorry! don’t even think in those terms anymore it’s been almost a decade since it ended

Neither. Just a good show

It’s worth it

You'll enjoy it. And you'll take better care of your liver.

funny

My liver's been shot, so this sounds appealing.

Also you should be running an adblocker

funny

I usually leave it off at work for sites where I want to see ads, but I'd never watch youtube without a blocker. Youtube ads are obnoxious.

Also, Im a director, so no a cd wouldn't be telling me what to do.

I just started it a few weeks ago and love it. I was fearful about watching it though. With Spending the past few years learning the business and comping a book, I was already crazy consumed and obsessed. Was worried it’d just fuel more unrealistic expectations.

The pitch parts are really motivating though.

helpful

It’s an excellent show. It happens to be set in the world of advertising but it’s about much more than that. It’s not any more like ‘real life’ in an agency than Better Call Saul is like ‘real life’ in a law firm.

like

Madmen will make you realize that the business today is no longer a profession. It’s a celebration of the halcyon days that are long gone. Sorry but true.

like

What on earth are you talking about? It's even more of a profession than before.

I think you're maybe conflating that with it transitioning from more of an art to more of a science.
