If I'm considering an MBA, do I need to go to an ivy league to make it worth it? I keep seeing that it's valuable for personal reasons, but then the part that is valuable for work seems to be dependent on the school name. If that's true, I'm not sure that there's any personal reason that would make that much energy/time/investment worth it.

More than half the Ivies aren’t even an M7. An M7 would be worth it. T10 and T15 are great, too, depending on what your career goals are. Ultimately, to determine whether it’s worth it for you, you’d have to ask yourself the following: 1) What am I trying to get out of an MBA program? 2) What could be my salary potential if I don’t pursue an MBA? If the base is higher than the average base of an MBA hire in the industry you’d like to pursue, is it still worth it? If so, why? (Should tie back to #1) 3) Do you have a family to support? Are you in consulting at the moment or a job as strenuous as consulting? If you have a family, are you able to juggle both work and a PT MBA? Are you able to take 2 years off for a FT?

Some industries like consulting have it as a quasi-requirement for promotion. A resume check mark. This is not the case in tech companies. Here, an MBA will have little to no direct effect on your career. Still, you can come out with a strong alum network if you attend top programs. That's easy referrals on top or resume value. You may also get some excellent immediate connections if you attend a top school. Everyone in these programs has at bare minimum a single recommendation from an influential corporate figure when they go in. If you network well and the stars align, you may happen into a career catapult. This one's also doable without the programs, but they may help. Online programs are much harder to take advantage of in this capacity.

Why do you want an MBA? Are you wanting to transition out of engineering management? I have an MBA from an Ivy (Penn) and no one in the Silicon Valley technology industry has ever cared about it (I've spent time in senior engineering management roles and in product management). At times I actually felt like the MBA actually detracted from my resume and made me seem like "a suit" and undermined my technical credentials. I went to MIT for undergrad and that is the only credential anyone seems to remember or care about, even 15 years later. Of course, other industries are different. I did management consulting for a bit and they basically required the ivy league MBA.
