If I’m going to drop the bag on an mba I feel like I need to know what I’m getting myself into post-mba and that I’ll like it. What doors does an mba open? What careers do folks with mbas work in?

1. A 2 yr vacation from having to work. 2. You get to back to a college campus, have fun, go to football games, go to happy hours on Tuesday nights. It is so much better the second time. You really appreciate it. 3. The winter and spring break "treks". Thinly veiled educational trips to foreign lands, that are actually booze-fueled boondoggles. Truly epic. 4. Second semester of 2nd year is a wonderful blur of boozing, sleeping in and eating nachos 5. You learn frameworks and how to pronounce "finance", fuhnance. 6. You get a fantastic pay bump 7. You make a lot of great new friends and many meet their future spouse

100% agreed. I don’t think I learned that much in school but being able to take 2 years off with like minded classmates at that specific point in life is priceless. I am also casually recruiting right now and it really helps to have the network (reach out to learn more about the company and eventually get referrals - interviews are tough to come by without referrals at tech in SF Bay Area)

Know why you’re getting it. Usually there’s a specific reason and I’d say figure that out before you think about getting one. Me personally, I’m changing industries, and the only way to get a position that pays equally in the new industry is to go for management positions that require an MBA

I recently got diagnosed with ADHD. I'm 31 and found this only because b school and post mba consulting job was/is much more challenging than anything I did before. What I'm confused about is that even as a teenager I could read entire books overnight. But the last two years of high school I started selectively zoning out and the problem has become worse since. I just realised it now. My doctor has suggested treating depression (I was also unaware of this) with Wellbutrin first (contd)

Down because I got some upsetting (work-related) news yesterday. I was up for promotion and did not get it, basically for my actual job that I have been acting in for over a year. I had perfect reviews and perfect on the technical portion of the interview. Apparently they dinged me on something subjective relating to situational competencies. Colleagues—who I trained and mentored—did receive promotion and we will all be working at the same job, just them at higher level and pay. Contd.
