If I’m starting on a 100% travel engagement and my parents live an hour away from my home office & they’ve been begging me to move on back home, is it worth keeping an empty in my home city?

Nooo totally move in with your parents and save money! That’s what I did ;)

Same! Their house is way nicer than i could ever afford and I'm really enjoying an extra $1600/month

Agree, move and save the money! There is lots of baggage that comes with moving back with parents, especially if you haven’t done it in a while. I would talk yourself through the price you will pay for moving back :) not trying to discourage you from moving back in any way, I just want to make sure you fully grasp what you are getting into. Also recommend giving yourself a concrete timeframe for a checkpoint with yourself on re-evaluation. For instance, after 3 months, I will re-evaluate the pros and cons for myself and potentially stay put with my parents or move out based on how I feel.

You know you could show your project is now in a diff city and you have to move for work. They will let you out easier - as in less penalties etc. you have to phrase it such that you don’t have a choice - it’s work. I’ve done it and it worked.

Definitely move in and save the money! You'll be savings thousands of dollars

Depends on your life stage. A year out of school? Sure. 10 years later? Hell no. Especially if I’m only home on the weekend, I love my privacy - it is worth every penny (unless your bf has a place or if single you don’t intend to bring a guy home).

Thank you everyone!!! Now have to deal with getting out of my lease early 😬

Totally agree - move in with them. Set financial goals for the season of less rent. Also, have a clear discussion with parents about boundaries (boosted by paying some amount of rent). Let them make a little and you keep savings growth toward retirement or down payment or your other longer-term goals. Don’t do it as a short term goal. Too hard to reap the repayment after moving costs

I think the problem with consultants is you are overpaid from the very start because you generate revenue, even with zero skills and are willing to travel. Over time that evolves to arrogance because you think you know more than your clients when the reality is your sample set is quite small. I have spent equal time on both sides and would counsel you to be careful in a remote post COVID world because we are all realizing we have more employee capacity than we thought.
