How is it dishonest? If you work 40 hrs Mon-Thurs why would you need to use PTO in Friday? Of course you communicate to the relevant folks that you are taking time off, make sure you’re covered, blah blah. But you already put the time in that week. It’s not an ethical question. It’s an administrative question.
Again, probably not something you should do all the time - the optics of that as a trend may not fly - but unless you’re on a performance improvement plan, freaking nobody cares.
EY1 - no one is going to look at his/her time sheet...
The compliant answer is yes. Now have I decided to not lose my PTO and charge vacay time as I have been in your shoes before? maybe once or twice or more times than that...
If you intend to be unreachable, then yes
You guys are missing the point - if you’re planning vacation it more than likely means you scheduled it with your team in advance and thus you are not failing #1 meeting your professional commitments by being available. Obviously if you were taking every Friday off this would be a huge problem for your teams and most likely your ability to get things done, assuming you’re finding/being assigned an appropriate amount work. It’s obviously a balance.
Not charge*
No. Nobody cares about the balance of hours on a given week, so long as you hit 40. Unless you’re underperforming or something.
Nope. U hit 40 that's all any One cares about
Thank you sa1! One of the actual advantages of this job is supposed to be the flexibility. It s about 1) meeting your commitments, and if complete 2) meeting firm min requirement (40 hours)
If this were true, we could all take off on Fridays
Same, record it accurately, put nothing Friday. Theres no requirement against blanks.
No
What does arms say?
It’s about ethics people. Be honest. The track record may matter one day
You don’t?
That’s the problem with making it a rule EY3. That’s why I said it should probably not be a long term trend. Clearly you have to be available to your team on Fridays. But done occasionally, again, nobody cares.
If this were true I could take every Friday AND most Thursdays off. The better question is, how do you only have 40 hours worth of work?
You're working on "internal initiatives"
I am sorry, but I think this is a big issue. And if your response includes nobody cares or nobody looks at your time sheet, ethics is not about whether people care or if you get caught. The reality is people do care and do look at your time sheet. We are running a business and one that pays you a lot of money, and not to just work 40 hours a week. If you are not taking time off and do not have a comp time arrangement on your project, you’re expected to help in other places and book your time the right way. It’s these little things that people DO notice, whether they tell you or not, and make a difference in you career trajectory to say nothing of your own ethical maturity. Appreciate you working hard and hope you can get time off to relax - always needed - but do it the right, ethical way. And when someone says nobody cares or nobody looks, that should be a big clue to the fact that it probably isn’t right. Okay FB ... rain down the hate. 🤨
Sorry I just straight up disagree. Your commitment to the firm is to find work, complete the work assigned to you, and be productive in other ways if still not at 40 (or 45 whatever your min is). For most people that’s not a problem since we have even more than that assigned. And so when you communicate and get approved a day of vacation and have already met your firm and engagement commitment that week there is not a problem. The counter to this is when someone has to take vacation and is forced to work even more before they go out, how is that fair to the employee... if I have a week of vacation I take all 5 days as pto no question because I didn’t meet the firm hours commitment any other way.
