It helps if you have even a passing understanding of who MLK was and what he said. Google is free.

we forget he was 39 years old when he was murdered which leaves a lot of room for evolution. Strategy changes so do people.

Given what we know I think he would have changed. He rejected bootstrapping and knew there was a divine widening with the “well intended”.

“First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." - Martin Luther King Jr.
Typically MBB. Ask a bunch of questions and provide no answers.
Typical EY: ask no questions, provide no answers nor value
Like how Colin Kapernick tried to?
"And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? ... It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity."
Martin Luther King Jr.
Now I wanted to say something about the fact that we have lived over these last two or three summers with agony and we have seen our cities going up in flames. And I would be the first to say that I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, non-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view. I'm absolutely convinced that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt. And I feel that we must always work with an effective, powerful weapon and method that brings about tangible results.
But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots...
MLK Jr
If MLK was alive today and saw the shit still going on, he’d say burn the place to the ground and start over.
Just giving you a hard time. I agree though. Who know what his stance would be with 60 more years.
Rising Star
Probably not, because this generation values one-liners on twitter, profile views, and going viral over thoughtful, coordinated displays of force and solidarity.
Tbh I think people *want* the discourse and hard conversations. There is just no venue to host it while retaining a shred of civility. Also no *actual* leadership owning the messaging. That’s why it’s easy to point to the rioters or the people who lynch joggers for fun and say they are the face of “them.” That’s bullshit, and today there’s no way to convey that.
I think I agree. Esp. With the emphasis placed on going viral vs. structural change. I wonder if the lack of leadership is infact the root of the lack of civil discourse. I.e., folks being unwilling to step up to herd cats given level of divisiveness that already exists
I don’t condone violence esp in the way that it’s happening rn, but to be clear MLK achieved very little in terms of racial justice. It was Malcolm X that shook the govt and scared them to the point of actually working towards finding a solution. Malcolm X was never a let’s wreak havoc type of guy though he was more of eye for an eye, do to them as is done unto you. I see no point in stealing, burning, looting buildings and homes of people completely unrelated to the officer that killed George Floyd

and like 11 hours ago the response doesn’t change.
As it was staid before Dr King stated riot is the language of the unheard.
When someone decides to listen and act with intent then things will change. Until then expect to see more riots
as you are keen on cherry picking....

Looks like you got your answer, OP...
11 hours after my initial post and ATL is being razed to the ground. Chaos, destruction, sheer craziness going on. At this point, the real issue at stake is being lost in the noise and unnecessary distraction on whether the vandalism and looting is justified or not is sucking up all the air.
MLK was right — “...riots merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving of the guilt”. This is exactly why violence especially when uncoordinated free-for-all is a headwind vs. tailwind
SM1, not cherry picking. More of the quote (and others) in the thread above and on the internet - all of which you should be able to access. The fact that MLK was a proponent of non-violence is clear as day in his speeches and know to many except perhaps to you.
In any case, when you say “when someone decides to listen and act...”, who is that? And is that who’d hurt the most with vandalization of Target and CNN?
Look, people are angry, frustrated, disappointed, just angry. For good reasons. People should express their anger. March the streets, protest, vote — all are needed. I could even get around a targeted show of force e.g., at the police dept. — directed at the source of the problem, doesn’t create distractions. What is not needed is this whole razing down cities in a free-for-all and for the hell of it. Not helpful to the cause and in fact hurts it.
