If my principal never came into my classroom to observe me this year, should I just ask for an effective rating or highly effective rating outright? If there are zero concerns, then things must be ok right? Principal regularly observes other staff, and has several on 'plans' so it isn't a blow off thing going on.

I never understood complaining about a lack of observations. It is a reflection on those who fail to do the required number of observations not you. It’s been months since admin was supposed to confirm the documents from my observation. They failed to do so and are now invalid. Not my problem.

The only person getting written up in that case is the admin and then a different admin would be assigned for that teacher’s observation to avoid cranky observations.

Question: If you’re not on a “plan,” which I assume from context is bad, does the difference between effective and highly effective matter? I know it affects pay in some places, but it means nothing where I work.

Anyway, I ask because if it was me, I would fly under the radar so they give me some version of a good rating. No fuss, no muss. And because it was such a hassle-free method, it would be a repeat for next year. And I would never see an admin in my room again.

(I’m probably too optimistic, though…)

I finally got one highly effective observation in 20+ years!

Mine has to do 4 obs during the year. It’s his job, not mine. But if you get anything less than effective you could go above their head and let them know they never observed you so what is he/she basing this on?

I was told one year that I would have been ranked "highly effective" except that I would need to "bring the public into the building."

I said, "Along with teaching full-time, I direct 3 plays a year. I literally bring over a thousand people from the community into the building every year."

They said, "Oh, yeah. Right."

Only year I was ever "highly effective." After that, I stopped caring. It's ridiculous. I still taught my best; I just don't care what they call it.

Exact same situation. Admin said, "You need to do this to be highly effective." Then I pointed out that I DO that. Received the highly effective status, and realized proving myself over and over again was silly.

I have no issues being observed, but I prefer admin not show up. It throws off the flow of class for my kids. I continue to do what I would normally do unless I needed to make a point, in which they will see only what I want them to see. To be honest, I think they watch me through the class camera when they are bored. They like to see what greatness looks like in action. 🙂 my kids worked hard to look great and love to show it off when they can.

You can simply ask for an effective rating.

If lack of admin really bothers you, next year invite them to watch a lesson or two that you have control of the situation. If they don’t show up, it’s on them. Only bring it up if you feel the evaluation is unfair or biased. If it’s satisfactory, no worries. You know how awesome you are. You know your strengths and weaknesses. Do you need justification for either after the year we all had?

Pencil dipped in paint and shoved in my new electric sharpener.

There are acts of destruction daily in my classroom. Most of my classes are 25 kids in a small room. When my attention is taken for a second, someone does something like this. Gluing things to counters. Hiding paintbrushes instead of cleaning them. 15 years, I've tried everything to cultivate a respectful classroom culture, and they just don't care. I'm so tired. So, so tired. I don't know how much longer I can do this.

Welcome to our pre-k inclusive classroom. Even with 8 students, and only face to face for 4 hours, we struggle. We struggle being heard through our masks. We struggle with social distancing. We struggle as we find ourselves constantly reminding students to keep their masks on. We struggle to keep them engaged and to teach. I have to rant and seek advice. It’s my 5th year teaching overall. I’m a 1st year at a new district it’s been really nice except for just some very small inconveniences: no classroom budget, too many meetings during planning time, printers are so bad that I had to bring mine from home, my district gives teachers chromebooks for laptops. I’m a a point where if I was invited to come back next year I’d say tell them no, am I crazy, is it just me? Please help

I can manage my classroom better if I don’t respond to emails outside of office hours. This gives my mind a break and by consequence refreshes me for the next day. It also sets a boundary.

So my AP environmental science students take their AP test next Thursday, and I have 63 students taking it. I decided I want them to have dinner / a senior gift. I decided to ask for donations for $500 and in less than 3 hours I exceeded $400, most donations from past students. My point, you are making a difference if you feel you aren’t, I was reminded of that today.

Last Spring I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. When I was diagnosed, I think I had had it for several years. My doctor put me on a diabetes med (my A1C was 10.2 and my blood sugar was 270). I knew I didn’t want to deal with the adverse effects of this disease, so I made some drastic dietary changes, started exercising, and brought my blood sugar down.
