I know this topic does not get talked about much but will eventually impact almost all of us so here goes. I am thinking of retiring (early) and would love recommendations for countries that I can retire to that. Primary factors would be cost if living, safety, warm climate, good health care system, (preferably) close to the US - not a requirement, stable government and laws, diversity in landscape (beach, rivers, mountains). Definitely not super rich so thinking of 5k a month in expenses.
How do you handle not getting a promotion or bonus based on subjective reasoning? Would you stay with the firm? Context: Outperform my peers and exceed my goals, yet still denied.
Thoughts on HOA fees? I’m contemplating purchasing a condo in Washington DC and have my Redfin filter set for condos that charge below $400 p/m, but the offerings are limited. There are a few that I love in the $550s but that feels financially unwise - it seems like a waste of money and a barrier to eventually selling and/or profiting off of rental income..? For context, I’m 29, make 220k (300 if I can get the bonus) and am budgeting up to ~450k for the purchase. Thank you!
How does somebody end up as an expert on expert networks? Sounds like a great exit option as you approaches retirement.
Quit my job and it felt so good, my Manager was an extraordinarily nasty person! Wondering if I should give HR the real feedback at the exit interview or just pretend everything is okay and move on. Thoughts? Manager has no empathy, has a clique within the team and openly plays favourite within the team. Example with flexible holiday her favourites can take 30 days a year but others like me are not allowed above 15 days. Will it make a difference telling HR for the sake of others in the future?
Where do you work, and what educational benefits does your employer provide? Currently working full time and taking some classes toward my master’s. I’ve been at my firm for a little over 2 years as it was my first gig out of undergrad. It provides an annual stipend for education, but I’m bored, unchallenged, unfulfilled, and underpaid. I want to explore what other companies offer to make an educated decision as to whether I should go elsewhere. TIA!
How is FTI san francisco?
2 YOE doing primarily CDD/IT DD/Tech DDs. Degree in engineering physics. Feel I need to switch in order to not burn out. Obvious choice is data analyst with my degree but don’t feel like throwing away 2 YOE going back to entry level with pay cut - and not interested in the job. Will there be good exit opps if I stick it out, or am I just digging the hole deeper by staying? Please - any advice is appreciated!

Has anyone made a move from a boutique firm to Big Law, regretted it, stuck it out, and found success? I am in the ‘regretted it’ phase, but it may be culture shock. I started as a legal assistant for a solo practitioner 11 years ago and am now an IP Paralegal. I’ve never had keep track of billable time, and I think that’s one of the biggest adjustments.
Did you ever accept an offer and before joining that company you ended up getting a better offer? If the role and title are pretty much same, what would you do if the new offer is 50K more per annum?
