If the intern asks how late I stayed last night I’m going to tell him. If the manager has a problem with that they can figure out how to staff an engagement so I don’t have to stay until 3:00am.

Tell him the truth, he needs to know what he’s signing up for

I wish more people would be honest about that. I had no idea what I was signing up for because I don’t come from an accounting background and didn’t know much about the workload of PA. I definitely accept my share of the responsibility in not researching it enough, but it would have been nice to have a bit more transparency

I hate how everyone tries to shield the interns. Isn’t this suppose to be a real world experience

Pwc1 even if you “do your research” people are going to lie. Everyone told me it wasn’t that bad...

The only thing we should be telling interns is "your mileage may vary." Every firm has good jobs and bad jobs, good groups and bad groups, good managers/partners and bad managers/partners. Unless you know what team they are going to be on there is very little way to predict any given intern's likely experience as an A1. So we should tell them the truth - "It all depends. Some people will end up in great situations and some won't. Some that could excel if on a better/different team will never get that chance. No, it's not fair, but it's not designed to be. So come roll the dice and see what happens." But we don't say that because we've built the business model around getting as many bodies in here as possible and seeing who sticks.

PWC 4, for sure. Stuff happens and you have to deal with it, but it is super unethical when I see managers saying things like “you’ll hardly ever be working more than 55 hours”. It’s awful. Honestly, I think if recruiting was brutally honest with new associates we would pull a smaller number, but the quality would be much higher and they would stick around.

We don’t shield the interns. If they want to stay they’re more than welcome. If not, we let them leave at a decent time primarily because they get paid overtime. Lying to potential future employees is insane.

How soon is too soon to be preparing for a lateral move? I did my 1L summer internship in a niche area of securities law, loved it, took courses on it. I decided I wanted to explore securities law a little more broadly and not to pigeonhole myself. The firm I’m at is great—doing sec lit—but has zero work in that niche area that I liked. I’m afraid that I am passing on a passion, and I don’t want to get too “old” for a firm to take me on if I have zero experience in a specialty area. Advice? Thx

I need some inputs on if I should pursue a MBA. Goal that I would use MBA for is getting into VC, only a undergrad internship in that space, or doing a search fund and like micro PE. I would consider corporate VC too. Alternative is to focus on meetups to meet founders, getting a better job and hit the accredited investor status so I can invest with angels. Undergrad was a top business school, so I feel strong with finance and other functions.

Thoughts on going with Fidelity to get my licenses (63,7) while still a junior in school. I have an offer from Goldman for an internship next summer but I’m leaning towards fidelity because they will pay for my school and I can start making money while still in school. I keep being told what I have to do, but no one will show me how to do it. Be very careful how you word IEP’s without being given. The wording. I have been here 2 years as an intern. Now, with 3 weeks to go, I find out the name of the support person? I was never given training and my intern support person never met with me. Not even once! I’m not being hired back because I don’t know how to do what I was never trained on.
