If the offer is genuinely fair, then don’t negotiate. Only raises the stakes and expectations of what you need to deliver. Walk-in with fair compensation, fair expectations, and good will, and blow their socks off with your performance. THEN, go to the table and negotiate hard. Just my 2 cents.
And I wasn’t saying that accepting a lower offer is what will knock their socks off. It is very much like what you said, your performance/capabilities is what will impress folks to give you leverage for negotiationg comp
Doesn’t hurt to ask. Only reason they’d say no is if the counter were out of line with the firm’s internal equity.
If I were you, in your counteroffer I would include a bonus $$$ and/or PTO negotiation; if they can’t award the salary, then they’ll likely award your other requests

Agreed that you should accept if it’s fair... you can loose some goodwill and when you come up with an excessive number they may just say “no thank you”. I don’t really want employees that expect 20% more even if they accept the lower offer
