If there is a balance on my Amex refused to be paid by firm (supposedly not policy), who does Amex pursue at end of day? Firm, or individual?

Unfortunately, you. Really, its best if you just return the Rolls Royce Phantom and get the charge reversed.

I'm surprised you are even trying to fight this. This could quickly morph into something so so so much worse. Pay the bill and make this go away.

Most of these corporate charge cards will allow the issuer to go after the employer if the employee completely defaults, but the employee's credit will be damaged and the employer may fire them over it. I guess a better question would be: if the expense was declined for being out of policy, and whatever discussion that ensued failed to change that, why do you think you can still get Deloitte to pay it?

like

Note that OP said "essentially" that's what s/he was doing. My guess is it's far shadier...

like

Yep, typically it's your credit, just a convenience for the firm to have the corporate card.

like

How did this happen exactly? I'm just curious... your friend had a square and charged your card on multiple occasions? And then your firm looked into it? I suppose he could have signed up as an uber driver and done it that way giving half his money to uber for it to be legit

like

Guys. The firm's policy enforcement team is much more sophisticated than I (we) thought.. they get a bunch of metadata from AMEX like who the square owner is and what bank accounts they use, etc.. they linked my friend to me because he lives in the same apt complex so his address is the same.. like I said, I never did this to try to cheat the firm or anything but it taught me the lesson of just being compliant with all policies and not try to outsmart the system

like

^not trying to be an asshole, but I don't understand why this is a lesson that needs to be learned. We make so much money on our own; I'd never risk my job trying to mess my my firm's expenses. It would have been so much worse if your expenses had been billed on to the client and they made this realization. If it feels like you are "outsmarting" something, then it's probably against policy and will put your job at risk if someone feels strongly enough about it. Why risk it for $30 or so?

like

Yeah - what'd you buy OP? 😀

Wish I could say something fancy .. but essentially I was letting a friend drive me to the airport rather than taking a regular uber :(

Not trying to fight it. I realize it might be conflict of interest but I didn't do it to cheat the firm or anything.. I guess I always thought about it as I had to pay someone regardless for taking me. But I understand and will pay the balance

I'm curious how this happened as well. Lots of taxis and drivers use square. There shouldn't be a way for expense to know/question you weren't paying a legit driver.

I'm guessing OP was submitting manual expenses (no card charge or receipt). I did this once when there was a snow storm on the weekend and there were zero taxis/Uber's available on Monday. I paid my roommate 75% of my normal taxi bill to take me to the airport since he was waking up 3 hours earlier than normal and driving in sketchy conditions
