Any English-speaking agencies in Berlin?
Anyone else feel a little uneasy that the industry press is praising a CMO who fired the agency who resurrected KFC, ran one of the most brutal pitch processes in years and has immediately made the work much worse?

Whoever decides to back off gives the other one the final say. Normally account would express their concerns clearly and then let the team decide if they want to face the consequences of a bad reception by the client. Risky ideas are usually presented as additional pushing the envelope options blah blah. It's a hit or miss but if I know the client is conservative and stubborn (which the team often also knows already - they should!) then I'll gauge the level of risk in making them angry versus amused by being presented the "controversial" thing. If low risk of damaging relationship or coming off as incompetent or not listening, then I simply warn the team to get ready for their hearts to be broken and let them present because it's better sometimes for them to hear it directly from the client rather me fight with my own team - even if I'm trying to protect them they don't see it that way but end up thanking me later. People should work on building team trust internally.
I had a great agreement with my past Director of Client Services. If it was on strategy, on brand and answers the ask, it goes to the client. Each team stays in their lane, remain experts and the authority in their lane.
If it ever comes to a true face-off between Account and Creative Directors on who calls the ball then you have way bigger issues as an agency team than what to share with clients. It should be a healthy push/pull relationship. There are times I dig my heels in and times my creative directors dig their heels in, but we respect one another and pick our battles. BOTH of us have to feel comfortable with the work before it’s shared with clients...or it doesn’t get shared.
Strategist. Neither CD nor account can be sufficiently objective.
Don’t be precious. Present both. Client decides
Creative director. It’s actually their job to take in the information from the client, passed through account service, and serve up the best creative based on their understanding of the client. Also, most CDs have plenty of contact with the key clients — enough to make this kind of judgment call. Lastly, most of the CDs I have encountered have way more experience than their AD counterparts. ADs are a dime a dozen
Genuinely believe it should be the CD.
It should be the CD. As long as the client business objectives are being met and there is alignment from a strategic direction there should not be any room for discussion. Ultimately the Creative Director is or should be responsible for the creative output.
Creative director
Creative Director. Do you really want the creatives to make a concept they don’t want to make?
Needs to be the CD
It should be the CD. More often than not, I see the Account Director make the decisions. It sucks.
I’ve seen work get presented that was way off strategy and completely in the face of everything the client asked for or had done before...and it sold. So, I vote the CD has final say.
Seems like the better question is does an idea get killed by the Account director or client?
I don’t think anyone wants to kill ideas. What most people want is an idea they can believe in, buy and have it work
Account Director. But then again our culture of creativity is archaic
Depends on the agency. At JWT it’s the account. When I worked at BBDO it was more of a creative say but we account ppl did get to say “i told you so” hahahaha (but i seriously thinks strategy, account and creative should be as much aligned as possible because that’s how you protect agency interest and win as a team)
Ideally everyone has a balanced view of what’s good for the client, the agency and the work and factors that into the decision. Regardless, whatever decision gets made, fight ABOUT the work internally. Fight FOR the work externally.
Creative Director.
AD usually brings the business, which then allows for any company to bid. CD is to bring his/her team together and hear AD/Client pitch taking over from there. The end result should be a beautiful marriage of the two.
Huh?
Whoever has the best idea or execution of it
