Yeah I agree with you OP. To answer your question I would like a data driven plan to reopening. Set some guidelines and KPI’s we need to hit and the gradual openings based on those metrics.

With that being said, the administration has set a 14 day guideline but it is largely ignored, although I think certain states like MD are following it yet being blasted.

You can’t just say “testing” and end with that as a strategy. Testing gives you a data point, not a strategy to move forward. Set a roadmap with current results, keep testing and adjust the roadmap as needed with the data given. It’s not that f’in hard.

like

It’s not that hard, unless you are hopelessly incompetent, terminally lazy, and surround yourself with unskilled sycophants. So here we are.

like

Anything I can think of requires a ton of money and work, not sure how realistic/viable it is.
- ramp up testing, make it free, make it easy, start sentinel detection programs in industries that are higher risk (meat packing, hospitals, public transport, aged care, schools, airplanes)
- hire more contact tracers, use an app/encourage people to write a physical diary of people they are in contact with; yes it won’t be very useful because ppl will naturally distrust this but it’s honestly better than nothing.
- have a plan for outbreaks and guidance for businesses (threshold at a business before it should shutdown, procedures to encourage workers to stay home if sick and not offering bonuses to encourage people to come in no matter what, cleanliness/sanitation requirements, masks, mandatory training for workers)
- better messaging, encourage people towards lower risk behaviour (outdoors, small gatherings, spread out, don’t share food, limit to an hour or two etc) rather than higher risk (nightclubs, cinemas, churches etc).
- the one thing that stumps me is public transport, if people need to go to work and transport is crowded I’m not sure how they’d mitigate that. More services, encouraging carpooling, subsidised parking?
- some places can open up more than others based on density and availability of hospitals etc
- provide more transparency on excess death levels, ppe levels, testing levels etc. People in Vietnam take it very seriously because they know that if they get it, their hospitals can’t cope because there’s no resources. Some areas/counties just don’t have the resources.
- there needs to be a lot more coordination at a national level, the states can’t be fighting for resources

The dems are reasonable people. If Trump resisted opening, it would be a rare moment of bipartisan consensus.

likefunnysmart

How far into the punch bowl are some of you guys that you actually believe the Democrats’ plan simply amounts to “opposite of trump”. Democrats have routinely stated they believe in listening to the health experts, as this is a global pandemic. Republicans appear to be singularly focused on reelection (surprise) and are looking for any means to prop up the economy before November, even to the tune of tens of thousands of preventable deaths.

Everyone wear a freaking mask. Hand sanitizer EVERYWHERE.

And Trump's problem is he has no plan whatsoever because he doesn't want the responsibility of the job he has which requires him to actually give enough of a crap to listen to people who know wtf they're talking about.

like

Democrats are generally pro-science and will go along with whatever scientists say.

Although I guess the unemployment boost lasts through then, so I may be being hyperbolic

This is just not true. If Trump were against opening there would be a rare moment of bi partisanship and the Dems wound support him.

But opening will disproportionately affect poor people so he and the GOO won't support it.

Plan— test test test test test test

It’s really this simple (in concept - obviously not in execution).

1) figure out who has it
2) if you have it, stay home and/or go to the hospital until you’re well.

I know reasonable people on both sides of the aisle. Issue is can’t say the same for the outspoken minority in either party.

The middle road here is shockingly empty. A chimp could look at the data and conclude “Oh yea we should continue quarantines on elderly and rest facilities and universally test everyone who sets foot in these. Also people with underlying health conditions should continue to observe the lockdown as well and receive some type of aid but the rest should go back to work and wear masks on the subway”

But his team knows when risk falls. Right now, few seem to care.

Look here - people cherry pick "studies" to prove things. People that don't understand those studies

I think we can all (or at least most of us) agree that we need to reopen at some point. However, I disagree on reopening without a plan in place.

Testing capacity still needs to be ramped up and we need stricter policies on enforcing masks on people. Unfortunately we have quite a few people in our country who still don't believe in masks and care more about this meaningless "personal right" in the midst of a public health crisis...

We're not ready until we have to plan to solve these issues.

No one is anti-opening. Not a single person on Earth.

People are anti-rushing back without being prepared to handle a spike in cases. Anti-winding-up right back in late March again. It’s all too easy to look at the various curves and conclude that we are rushing this. That the American system got so desperate, so fast, that we reopened at the top of the curve.

I’ll be interested to watch Wisconsin’s experiment. If their cases spike, if their economy bounces back. If they go back into hiding.

An endless cycle of open/retreat is about the dumbest possible plan. Ha, I said “plan.” There’s no plan. Plenty of divisive election year politics though.

like

So just to loop back, no one has proposed an actual plan. Just more bitching that the current “plan” isn’t effective.

Apparently hackers have flooded an Ohio website with fake names so they get overwhelmed. Not sure how true it is but if so.

You’re wrong, OP. Know how I know? I can remember like 6 weeks ago when Trump was shutting everything down and Democrats 100% agreed with him and for a brief moment the government was more or less working in unison. It’s not all politics. Democrats don’t automatically oppose good policy just because a Republican says it — they value experts, at least most of the time. Can’t really help it if Trump stops listening to experts and tries to turn this into a wedge/political issue.
Republicans are, for better or worse, the more cynical political party. They will propose bad policy for political gain and power consolidation. Democrats don’t do that very much.

I see some real conflict brewing after this pandemic. 🙄 Comment on if you would rather work from home, in the office, or prefer a hybrid approach.
