Because the pay is tied to location, and most of the location changes from last year are still temporary. Companies that have the budget want to hire the most talented, and don’t want to feel like they get the short end of the stick if they pay someone a Bay Area salary when they live in the Midwest. There’s still a bias that the strongest talent will be located permanently in bigger cities.

Because I don’t think companies know if they’re WFH for a long time yet unless you’re Microsoft

like

If you look at the job listings directly on the Microsoft website it says the locations and also a remote location tag. Might not come through if you’re looking on LinkedIn

Companies eased up drastically comparing to Pre-COVID. But many leaders are #okboomers who don’t want to change their mind that quickly. They think that productivity is up at wfh setting, because everything is closed an people simply don’t have anything else to do.

Labor is not a free market like goods or services. That has some cons and many pros. One cons is that as an individual it's harder to get employed for a big role based in a rural area. Your competition is folks who live in big cities. The pro is that you only compete against folks with work visas in the same country as you, instead of competing against the whole world like freelancers do.

Any lawyers here with Spasmodic Dysphonia? I left the practice of law after a year of experiencing symptoms. The doctors I was seeing at the time told me the symptoms were due to stress and encouraged me to leave my career and find a better balanced life. About 6 months after leaving a very successful position, moving states and working only part time, my symptoms worsened. During this time, I was diagnosed with SD and just this August returned to practicing law, but now I am really struggling.

Query to more senior attorneys who review work: what is the rationale for not making edits but rather a bunch of comments for the associate to incorporate?

I’m new to the senior/supervising role. However, I find the above approach super inefficient and ineffective, and prefer making edits in redline with comments explaining my edits and an open invitation to ask questions. Occasional comments like “try something like this” with examples.

Not judging, just curious.

Do you always need to have a hardship story/ overcome major obstacles? I think it’s just not going to impress anyone in my case and I’m wondering if a success story is the way to go. If you had an unusually impactful career, is it fine to just own the fact that life wasn’t an uphill battle, but you really made use of the opportunities that were given to you? Artificially looking for hardships seems so fake...
