Time zone is a very important detail here. I'm based out of NYC but for the past month I've been working remotely from California (3 hours behind). Honestly, I love it. I don't mind being online at ~5:30 depending on the day sometimes 6 because most people I work with start to sign off at 3PM local time. Allows for a full afternoon with the sun still up and normal life still going on. Also if you're bogged down with work you can work a few more hours in the afternoon and no one is bothering you. Yes, if you work with European clients than it gets a little crazy but you can make it work.
San Diego is the move. Going back next month. Pacific beach area if you wanna party... mission beach is more tame... La Jolla is the nicest. Lots of great spots
I would leave the United States. Before this route I spent some time as an “advisor” for some government sponsored militia groups in a landlocked Asian country.
A LOT of the current attitudes, speech patterns, and behaviors I am seeing is strongly reminiscent of what I witnessed in that assignment (a country with an active sectarian war going on). It isn’t one thing I can point to. It’s a million little things pointing to a state of affairs where most people (ESPECIALLY political and security state officials) don’t believe their political opponents deserve to be treated with full human rights and due process, and that it’s morally acceptable to bully, steal from, and even cause physical harm to them.
My belief is that the same behavior will have the same result. Probably not as soon as the doomsday types think, but it will happen eventually and extricating yourself will take a lot longer than you think.
It’s a lot harder than you think to leave. I’ve pretty much given up on looking for a “Plan B” because I’m getting married and apparently they want married couples less than single folks in the places that are the most logical to move to. That, and my typical depression fueled word salad on the essay part of the literacy exam(IELTS ) made me just miss the score they’re looking for to bring people in. On the whole thing I got a solid B but a C- on the essay. So I would have to take that again.

This post is meant as a fun exercise, but I think our industry has been permanently changed by COVID. Remote work for consultants is going to continue well after quarantine. Travel will be more sporadic, more focused, and less regular. It will be for workshops, milestones, presentations, etc. But for most of us, the weekly grind isn't going to be a thing for a long time.
So, this could be a serious consideration for many of us. I'm looking at a piece of land in the rural pacific northwest. Might be my new home base.
I don't want to gainsay Fauci, but there are considerable assets in place to support travel that taxpayers have been supporting through this pandemic.
Three large airlines with huge amounts of capital, Marriott and Hilton, and other hospitality assets as well still exist. When the pandemic starts to thaw these companies will start to encourage travel again. Their marketing will be powerful.
I agree with many here, I think we will need less travel to client sites but the clients will dictate this like they have in the past.
Florida so we you can enjoy the warmth all year around and it apparently is better there covid wise
Masks can get uncomfortable but the risk seem to outweigh the benefits. Hang in there folks. If we work together For a little while we can get this past us.
Traveling the country in an RV right now while working remote to try to figure this out myself.
Yes, it was approved and leadership is aware of my situation @M7

Bcg4 — yeah. That is true. But I really don’t mind. My wife and I live on a few acres of land (in PA) and we don’t interact with many people as it is. As long as we can get groceries & liquor, and we have an emergency power generator, we will be fine. :)

Park City, Utah. Some of the best skiing in the world, great hiking and other outdoor activities in the summer, and just 30 minutes from a major international airport

I was just there. The snow is the best in North America. Very pricey, though. A little 2 BR shack downtown is going for $1.2M.

Shhhhhhh. Charleston doesn’t need any more people
I always thought I was a city person and had to be in, or within close proximity of, one always.
Now I feel like a more rural/mountain/country type place is for me.
I want to live in Schitts Creek, with the same cast of characters. That would be ideal.
I was also born and raised here. Upstate is anything past westchester

Miami
Where in Miami do y’all live, why there, and what’s the cost of rent? Me and gf are considering Miami but I’ve personally never been (while she has). Would very much appreciate any info 🙏🏻
I just did a month in Puerto Rico, Rincon was super dope! Screw being in one place, the world is your oyster now. I refuse to sign a lease 🤷♂️
I’d personally hit San Diego, Austin, Boulder, or Portland.
I imagine dating in PR would be tough though?
Metro areas: Charleston, Louisville, Nashville, Asheville.
Rural areas: anywhere in KY, TN, NC, WY, MO, or UT.
Why no ID?

Live in Boise, can confirm. Sneaky cool city
I’m considering Austin Texas.... thoughts?
Few years ago, there weren’t any homeless encampments and now it’s looking like LA. Why do Californians ruin everything

Hawaii
Ç2 I worked there for a couple of months this year and the time zone is no joke. I was getting up at 3am for calls with Europe because that was the only over lap.
Family like it because remote school was done by noon.
