If you are working on-site at a client’s office 100% and you are basically working and being treated like their in-house employee, is it cool to say I worked at client’s company on my resume?

No. What’s with all the unethical questions on here lately? Be a professional, people. The other thread about putting work in a portfolio that the OP only had a thin sliver of involvement in...this is just as bad. Put the agency on your resume. Put the client as the client, and explain the situation in the cover letter or explain it in your interview. Besides, If a prospective employer calls to verify your employment, the client’s HR person would not have your name in their system. So you could ruin your chances with a lie like that.

likesmart

We call roles like that "embeds". So most people I know put something like: Associate Director, agency name, embedded at client name - as their job title/company. It is a completely different role than just working at the agency and it's important to differentiate. So while you can't say you worked for the client, any way you can emphasize that you were an embed in your job title is better than just trying to do that in the bullets.

like

Double this. I wouldn’t call the question unethical at all @OP and get your reasoning. I started as a contractor at my current agency but converted to full time after 6 months. The contracting firm isn’t in my resume. The issue with listing the client as your employer on your resume is a recruiter would usually call the client to confirm employment and their HR won’t confirm.

like

Without putting the agency’s name that is

You could put CLIENT NAME (6 month secondment). I don’t think there’s anything unethical about that.

This unethical question came from questioning the role of my agency and relationship with the client. I interviewed with the clients before I got hired. Not sure if that’s normal. To me, client was hiring full time employees through agencies so they don’t get espp or other benefits. Maybe this is another conversation. Thanks for the comments though.

It sounds like you were hired through a recruiter? If so, then I would put freelance or temporary employee of that client that you were working at. It would be weird to say the name of the recruiter on your resume in my opinion because you never set foot in the office from what you just described?

And you can mention who the staffing was done through in the last bullet of your resume if you are worried about the background check.

You put the name of your employer. You could put “Embedded at American Airlines” or whatever in the description.

Nope

Do we want to guess? My guess is OP works for Havas at Coke in Atlanta.

Yah, I know. So what’s your guess?

Your question is not unethical. I’m in the same situation and act more as a client employee than an agency employee so have wondered the same thing. I like the “embedded” idea.
