Ok folks who’s about to get recalled.
Anyone here working at Doordash?
Question about an old injury ..... continued.
Do it then get back into consulting lol
AGR is full of the worst the military has to offer. It could be for $50K more per month and I wouldn’t touch it
Active Guard / Reserve. I agree with BCG1, people in AGR do absolutely nothing, so if you want a cush, low expectation job that’s impossible to get fired from then it’s great, but if you have the least bit of ambition (like many of us consultants do) you will want to blow your brains out from boredom and go nuts when you are passed over for promotion in favor of the guy who does nothing but drinks beer with the right people
Hell no
And by nature of AGR - might have to move after 3-5 years on the job.
13 more years to an active retirement - would be 47 with 30 years of service when I retired.
At 47 - pension is over $9,000 per month
Yes
OP, I think you need to check your math. My class just hit 20 years, and our retiring Lt Cols are not getting a 9k per month pension. 20 years gets you 50% of base pay, not allowances or special duty pay (flight, sea, hazardous, hostile fire, etc.)
I think OP doesn't understand the retirement system, or has a lofty view of themselves. Based on his $9,311 a month, adjusted for inflation, that would make his base pay $14,605 a month base pay in 2018 dollars. Which would mean that OP thinks s/he is retiring as a 4⭐.
M1 - I used this calculator - https://militarypay.defense.gov/Calculators/Active-Duty-Retirement/High-36-Calculator/. As an O5 with 30 years of service. I think it’s in future dollars (accounting for inflation and also annual military pay increases)
OP, I retract my statement, I missed that you put 30 years. How long were you AD up to now, or has all of your time been Res?
I have 16 years of total service - 5 of that active. That’s my dilemma. I could work 40 hours a week now, making the equivalent of a Manager (maybe more) at Accenture (factoring in not having to pay for medical, and no taxes on BAH, and not having to save for a pension) and I’m making $88k now as a SA. So obviously downsides are having to “drill” every month with the unit for no pay, and being locked into a job and location based on my assignment. But yes I would have 30 years in at age 47, if I went active now, and served my remaining 15 that I would need to serve.
OP, I did something like this (USMCR) for a couple years at the Pentagon. Got me a s*** ton of extra retirement points. Think of it as a break from your regular grind. You can always go back to Consulting
Yea do you think the 4 years of points would make a big difference? It would be 1,460 (that’s if I just did AGR for 4 years to finish out my 20) and then could go back to Consulting - I would be 37 at that point. It’s tough juggling drill and AT and consulting, so that was my other thought, just doing the 4 years AGR to finish my 20 years.
I completely understand the work considerations, but your retirement math is still off. The 11 years in the reserves are still computed via points, not years.
On average you would have 78 points per year, or 858 points. Divided by 360, it equals 2.4 years for retirement computation, not 11.
The max accrual is 130 points per reserve year which is ~ 4yrs of retirement credit.
That means that once you get your 20yrs AD, your retirement percentage will be between 56% (22.4yrs) and 60% (24 yrs), as opposed to the 75% for full AD.
Still good money (7-7.5k), but in 2018$ it equates to $5.2-5.7k per month.
It is never as simple a decision as it sounds.
M1 - Oh I see what you are saying, it would be my 20 active years, plus the reserve based years, so it wouldn’t be 30 AD years at retirement. I currently have 2,500 points.
OP. 👍
What’s AGR?
Well.....I’m E6 so hell no. I have a family to feed. Lol. Go for it.
