As part of the severance, negotiate a neutral review where they just confirm your title and tenure at the firm. My understanding is most firms do this anyways
Firms aren’t allowed to disclose anything more than confirming that you worked there from x to y date.
Recommendations: get them from the people who liked you.
Agreed! Negotiate that mutual non disparagement clause with them.
Had this happen (for a reason that would've been just as, if not more, embarrassing to the firm as for me). Firm's reference policy was already to only confirm title and dates of employment, but I also got it in the severance agreement with a specific HR contact. Haven't had any issues with it despite two laterals in the years thereafter. I also had partners there willing to give me personal recommendations to actually speak to work quality.
