I wouldn't talk anyone out of following their dream. However, I would offer up alternate careers they might like instead.
My father told me early on that being an elementary school teacher was just being a glorified baby sitter. He was a disenchanted high school teacher at the time.
I’ve thought a lot about this lately, as a student recently told me her mom (who used to be a teacher) discouraged her from pursuing a career in education. I think if he/she had a passion for it, I wouldn’t try to talk them out of it
My kid said she’d like to be a teacher once, and immediately followed it with...”although why would I want to be as busy and stressed out as you?"
NO. WAY. If they truly want to teach then more power to them!
I always tell my girls to follow their passion!! If you are meant to teach it will call you. Yes my girls see me stressed out at times but my 9 year old just asked why do I teach...my response because I want to make a difference and even when it’s hard i know i was meant to teach.
I would never discourage someone from teaching, but I would be honest. I would ask them to think about why they want to be a teacher It’s a lot of work, but so worth it! If you think it’s going to be an easy job that gives you summers off, then you’re not doing it for the right reasons...
I have been honest with my children. I think one may still become a teacher at some point. I have told them this is not the profession I joined 20+ years ago. I still love my students but the standardized testing, class sizes, expectations that discourage a healthy home/work balance, and lack of support by politicians, the public, and sometimes administration have decreased my morale. So, to some degree I have encouraged my children to follow their interests and passions but be aware of other more lucrative and less demanding professions.
