If you had the option that move and work in the US from London, would you do it? Why or why not? There’s the big salary vs WLB tradeoff

Have done both - much prefer European way of life, less car-centricity, more diverse arts and culture scene, better food, nicer environment and school systems for my children, considerably more holidays and social acceptance of taking long breaks, better state pension and public services, less poverty and social issues.

I can see the benefits of being in London/Europe, but doesn’t the higher salary (and more opportunities) in the US outweigh all of this?

I’m a native New Yorker and much prefer London. Of course I prefer American salaries but the London lifestyle is number one in the world. I prefer the elegance, sophistication, politeness, extreme diversity, far more interesting neighborhoods and city layout, a bit slower pace, and friendliness of London. I feel there is more variety, better shops, restaurants, groceries, cafes, amenities etc in London. London is like the idyllic West Village vibe but throughout the entire massive city. Plus if you need a weekend getaway you have all of Europe and Northern Africa within a 3 hour flight. Plus you can easily get to Dubai, Bangkok, Istanbul, Mumbai and even New York in just 8-9 hours direct. If you live in NYC, Asia is so far away. I can take one comfortable flight and be in paradise in the Maldives the next day. You really can’t beat London.

Makes a lot of sense!

US expat in London. I'm not sure I'll ever move back, having been here 10 years. The US is better for weather and for material things. Just about everything else is better here. And once you make it high enough on the consulting ladder it's tough to claim you really need more money for material things. I find the UK much less materialistic as well, due to generally greater socio-economic mixing and sensitivity.

If u want only money stay in USA...if u want to explore Europe enjoy more holidays on the beach.. come to UK.. london has history, culture n good food, all sporting events of the world , concerts etc..Best city in the world.. I would never go to USA even if they pay me a million a year.. been there and its boring .....

I don’t think I’d ever want to work in consulting in US, the chatter in the Deloitte bowl from our US peers makes me depressed

Did both and D2 is spot on. Also, the people and general diversity in the UK and Europe >>> US by far

I’m American. Been here nearly 8 years and want to move back for family — but I’m from a super high COL area so looking unlikely. Much prefer the lifestyle here. Biggest differentiators for me are: exposure to culture in London (it’s so accessible, from free museums to subsidised West End tickets), actually being able to take a sick day and not work, generous holiday allowance that you are expected to take in full, purchasing power, diversity of culture (my home area is increasingly a monoculture), and parental benefits. Even though childcare is expensive, it’s still much cheaper than in the US and the quality of our provider is much better value for money.

I didn’t realise until I was there just how bloody expensive US is surrounding the major urban areas. Cars, insurance, internet, holidays, groceries, pharma products, service charges etc. You have ability to earn a lot more but access to stuff seems to require setting your wallet on fire.

Any Americans who favour US over London?!?!! Want to hear the counter argument

They won’t be in this bowl because they’re likely not in London. As an American in London, I haven’t completely made up my mind. I really think it depends where in the US you would be going. If I didn’t have family in the US I don’t think I would move back, if I did move back it would have to be into a role that provided good WLB, it’s become a huge priority for me. That being said I miss the sunshine where I’m from and Autumnal colours.

Londoner here so excuse my innocence- surely moving to the States and doubling your salary puts you in the top 1% and so able to afford a higher standard of living?

See comment above on childcare cost in a HCOL city

Every single post here recommends to stay in London - im a born and bred Londoner and agree with all your main points! But there must be an argument to go to the USA other than money? Isn’t there anyone who enjoys the US over London?

No ways USA with guns and police so racist to black people... have you been to immigration at airport , the immigration offficer all treat you like a criminal.. and the TSA even worst.. never.. UK is much safe n better place.. n more human.. Will not work n live there even if millions they pay me..

I’m from London and been living in the US since 2005. Looking to return to London in the next two years. Your job is basically your life here but decently paid. I’d say definitely do it to give you more experience and exposure to living in a different country. Weather is a big issue for me and you can be guaranteed seasons here. The glumness of home is not something I’m looking forward to

No family here, parents getting older, miss going to footy/rugby. Previously lived east coast and now in California and want to get citizenship before we leave as kids were born here. Money isn’t everything but obviously need to be in a good spot
