If you had to choose between higher salary or work-life balance, what would you choose?

Time is your most valuable asset, and you don’t know how much of it you have left on Earth. Work life balance wins every. time.

You love what you do, are fulfilled, AND get paid. You CD1, are winning.

uplifting

Depends on what stage of your career you're in, aspirations, family life, etc. For me personally, it would be work life balance, but a kid fresh out of school going into Investment Banking or Public Accounting might feel differently than I do.

Always wanted both. Realized it was impossible in consulting. Had a baby and almost immediately took a significant paycut to get WLB. I am now very happy. Who knew money =\ happiness?

I bought my wife a restaurant franchise. She hired a bunch of staff and pays them over the industry average. Now she stays home. My advice to you: take the higher salary till you can purchase an asset

like

How have you guys been able to buck the industry trend of not being able to keep staff? All my friends in restaurants can’t keep their workers even though try payback above minimum.

The fact that we have to choose between the 2 speaks volumes …

When you’re young you need to try to make as much money as early as possible. When you’re old you need to hang on to that money.

like

I stayed at a company way too long and got stuck at below market wages. I left for a significant TC bump and better WLB. Will see if that ever happens again. I still think I'd take pay over WLB. As long as the package was equitable to the work.

like

What do you mean by WLB? Is that just a function of how many hours you work?

like

Depends on how much. If it’s something that would make me retire early and comfortable than yeah I’d choose that, otherwise nothing is more valuable than my time.

like

Why can’t I pick both…

like

Money to the point of a comfortable life beyond that fun work for less than 60h per week. I’ve been poor, it sucks. The “free time” you expect to have from working fewer hours is quickly filled because everything takes twice as long (laundromat vs in-home, taking multiple buses vs Uber, constantly repairing all of your stuff because you can’t afford to replace, endless tunnels of price comparing and surfing craigslist for deals, above all just the time being anxious that an unexpected expense will be catastrophic)

like

Money. WLB is never a sure thing, one moment you’re working for a decent boss next a monster so yeah just pay me and I’ll balance my life myself.

like

Actively choosing WLB > $ so my husband can pursue $> WLB…. He insists it’s for both of us.

like

One of life's biggest mysteries!

Get your money to a point where you have the lifestyle you wanted when you started, then keep that WLB as long as you can. It's easy to get caught up in lifestyle creep or title status so you feel like you have to keep chasing more dollars or fancier titles, but it's likely they won't make you happier (and might do the opposite) past a certain level.

Unexpectedly leaving consulting for industry. Background isn’t in apparel but got an offer to join a large international apparel company as a product director and decided to make the jump. Current TC is $183k with annual bonus between 10-20%. New TC will be $200k, $50k signing, annual bonus of 15-40%, and progression path to VP. Will also be managing teams around the world, so opportunity to travel internationally, which is a perk in my book.

Hey all, I know MBB sponsor international candidates but at what stage they look at your visa situation. Do they take into consideration initially before sending you any online assessment test and while reviewing your CV or they look for it after you go through interviews. I had a chat with previous McKinsey consultant and he was like you automatically get cut off from the system if you select 'require visa sponsorship'. Not sure if it is true or not?
