Bain if you want to use it as a stepping stone into private equity, else McK for most other functions and sectors given it’s reputation and (more importantly) greater alumni base. I’m sure there are plenty of sector/region combinations that BCG or Bain best McK, just don’t know which ones.

Bcg 2nd for both prestige and culture. Bain wins culture and McKinsey wins prestige. Depends what you value or maybe you value both

Neither of above. Management consulting has outlived its utility. This what you see is the final peak before descent

I think strategy consulting will continue demand will exist but overall demand would decline. Also whether MBB or a new player would capture future demand is a question

3 main drivers influencing these as per me:

1) Existing hot scale ups would become complex. However the overall spend on consulting by them would be less than companies formed in 1900s. A trend of spend of large companies formed in 70s,80s and 90s will will point us in the direction
2) new age consulting skill sets (data analysis with millions of lines; new medium of story telling; increasing implementation skills) leave MBBs open for disruption
3) Talent differential between industry and consulting getting reduced

Btw I would join Bain if given a choice; simply because I hear people are more fun there

like

Bain intentionally create this culture across the globe. I attended my pre-mba events of all mbb in Asia. Mck was with all undergrads, experienced hire, etc at a huge hotel room. BCG was at their office with some senior people speaking. Bain was with Bain alumni sharing at a hotel with drinks and chatting session. I would see it pretty representative of the culture (also from what I observed what kind of classmates choose which firm) .

like

Might be a hot take, but why do people pick BCG. I get people picking McKinsey for the brand, Bain for the culture, but what does BCG have going for it? Slightly higher pay?

like

Sometimes it’s good to be a silent second place. McKinsey gets way more negative media attention (no judgment as to whether it’s deserved or not), whereas we’re always referred almost as an afterthought. Yet — we do mostly the same work, similar culture, same analytic horsepower, etc… and have the same benefits (exit opps, pay, etc).

I’m fine with that.

like

So.. how do we interpret poll results though? There are simply many more mck employees than the other two

like

Few things spring to mind. I’m not saying these are all unique to Bain, and there are definitely way more things

1) Local office staffing, so office and the people in it plays a strong role in your time at Bain. At the same time, real effort to unify culture globally so it really feels like one firm (this is defs what gives off the cult-y vibes to others I feel)

2) Fewer, bigger start classes to give you a strong group of friends and plenty of events for start and classes and offices to get to know each other

3) Formal mechanisms to keep wlb in check, or at least acknowledge and try to find solutions for when it’s bad

These are valued and embodied throughout the firm (including by leadership). In a way the strong culture reinforces itself. People like working somewhere with a good culture, so they work harder to maintain it

like

Bain for work culture and Mckinsey for brand name.. so will get brand name first

like

Worked at both - smaller firm, so many more connectivity events. Event planning is taken seriously, and way more fun. It’s also here in McK, but bigger groups and feels more formal

None of them. I left McK for a Big 4 consulting position, at a considerable pay cut- but the WLB improvement has been totally worth it. From what I hear about BCG and Bain, they're pretty much in the same mould as McK, so, no thanks.

Hi Fishes,

what's the salary range for Manager (11 years exp) at ZS associates? How's the work culture? Does the company provide wfh?

Graduated in 2020, wanted to be a graphic designer, took a job at a startup in a social media role. The boss called me the "r" word for not handling entire 13-ish accounts roster well by myself. I quit. Found a role as social media specialist. Realized (again) that I hate social media. Moved to in-house mktg manager, only to be a glorified graphic designer / someone to call the city to cut down trees. I job hopped too much, I feel my portfolio is empty. How do I restart again? I feel defeated.

I am almost certain I have ADHD. I honestly have been having trouble reaching a place to get diagnosed. Can anyone share their path to their diagnosis? I found a place but they’re charging me 1.2k for the whole screening process. Is this right? I have insurance with EY (Anthem). I was going to get screened for this during college but COVID sent me home before I could go in. Now, I can barely get myself to do work. It’s easy work but I need the pressure to do it. I’m 23 and in SoCal.
