If you have a negative balance on your credit card (overpay every month) and use it until you go back to zero, do you still earn points/ cash rewards on your usage. Context: I am trying to see if I can essentially use my credit card as a debit card but still earn points at the same time.

Yes, you earn the same points.

You can’t really overpay like that unless you make a big return (for which you’d lose points), but you can pay before your deadline. If you carry a negative balance from a return, they may cut it and send you a check.

Points are calculated on each transaction. The balance you choose to carry, positive or negative, is unrelated.

Yes, you will accrue points.

How do you plan to overpay? When I've had a negative balance due to a return, they are usually pretty quick to cut a refund check. I don't think any credit card company would allow you to do this.

OP, do you think you’re accumulating interest by not paying it off immediately? You’re not. Interest kicks in if you don’t pay off the balance each month.

i have accidentally sent a double payment this past month. I know, yes I do consider myself privileged. My credit card balance went "negative" and i have been spending it towards zero this past month. would it work long term? maybe month to month it will work. might be a new generation version of the old school envelope of cash based budgeting system. just not as easy to switch money around.

Not sure when the check would get cut

Really not sure why you would want to give them your money in advance.. for what it’s worth, you can’t keep a negative balance for longer than 3 months. If you do, American Express will refund you and send you a check
